88 IROC MAF Connector "Clip" broke....random code 34.....not just broken clip?
The clip that "secures" the connector in the MAF sensor is broke off so there is really nothing ensuring the connector stays firmly in place. I never really had a problem with it before, every so often I would get a code 34 and would just reseat the connector and go about my way(once about every 2 - 3 weeks or so). Now the damn code 34 goes off like every other day and the connection is usually firmly in there before I reseat it. The other day I made sure it was seated good, restarted the car and the SES light came back on, killed the car, pulled the connector out and reseated it again and then I didn't get the SES light. This is starting to make me wonder, I know it is bad that the clip is broke but I figure I could rig something up to make sure it stays in there (wrap wire/paperclip etc. around it or something). The real thing I am worried about is the fact that the code 34 I used to get I could usually tell the connection was a little loose and now when I get it every few days the connection is not loose and looks/feels fine but I have to reseat it anyway so I can get the SES light to go out. Possible bad MAF, relays or the hookups to the throttlebody/air intake have come loose and are leaking?
Besides reseating the connector, something I haven't tried is "clearing the codes" by disconnecting my battery for awhile. But when I used to get code 34, just killed the car, reseated it and started her back up and the SES would stay off. As I said earlier a few days ago I reseated and the SES came back on after I restarted her so I had to reseat again (pull out completely and reseat) to get the light to go out....for now
What to do....what to do?

On my '85 there was a service bullitin on my PROM chip for false code 34 (among other things) When I would shut the car off and restart it the SES would be off for a while, then it got worse and worse as the programming in the chip went bad.
I asked the local Chevy service center about the code 34 but they didn't have a clue, then I found out from an ECM vendor about the bullitin. I then had to ask the service dept point blank if there was a service bullitin for my prom, they didn't know and had to go look it up..."yep there sure is". Shows what they know.

If you have to 'reseat' the connector that often and the problem goes away, something is wrong with it. Either the little metal connectors on the harness side are worn and not making solid contact anymore, or the pins on the MAF side are bent. You can get a replacement connector for the MAF, it comes with short pieces out of the connector as well, and you just cut off the old connector and put the new one on. I'd try that first, see if it helps. The connectors arent that expensive really.
