i still say.. as i said at the very beginning of this post.. your wasting your time and effort for something that is really kinda worthless...

if you want 12.9's.. build it that way.. instead of trying to make a car that was meant to run mid 14's... turn 12.9 by not really doing much to it..

/turns talking to brick wall mode off/

I think my friend is buying your car. You should get your 12.99 before you sell it!

Formula8!!, where are you going to be running the car at? There are some people around here who might find this fun. We are in central/southern Illinois.

12.9 or bust

Ok so the Formul8 has been in my hands for awhile now...

got 1.6 rockers on it and had to get the trans redone... 2600 vigilante stall.....

with drag radials on weld prostars pulled off consistant 13.31@99!!! 1.7 60 fts. Not to mention the posi was shot so I couldn't launch as hard as I wanted to....

The car is not tuned right.....It likes to surge and bog if you snap the throtle quick....

Soon to come- Siamessed runners to help with MPH, replacing 3.27 gear with 3.45. And some tuning....

With those final things I hope to do 12.9 before I get aftermarket heads in a few months...I'll keep everyone up to date!!

12.9 will be done or bust!!!!!!!

WOW!!!! That is awesome!!! It definitely has 12.90 potential with just a couple more things. I know the car has it and sounds like you are really doing your homework, Brandon!!

Let me know when you hit it!!

i'm right there myself last time at the track it ran 13.21@104.63 stock head/cam NA. that was last year. I have since pulled afew trick out of the bag. I'll be running it at E-town next month so I'll have slips to prove it as well. Gtech is saying I'm there but I want my slips to prove it before i believe the Gtech....

I sold the car with a stock cam and heads. So as far as I know, it is still stock.

As far as the valve seals, i had those replaced a few years ago. I wonder why they are leaking again? That is a very common problem with SBC's.

It started to smoke after installing the rockers.......My guess is that the little bit of extra lift on the valve ripped the seals cause the part of the valve that never touched the seals before does now beacuse of the 1.6 rockers........with almost 100K miles i'm sure the valve isn't perfectly smooth.....

STOCK is what it is, same crappy airflow as when GM rolled(choked) it off the line in detriot or wherever. I'm not saying that it can't be done, I (as a drag racer) don't believe it until I see this one. I would LOATHE to be proven wrong!!! PLEASE DO IT!!!!

Check out this thread that GTA Matt started, he ran 13.15. I have since Ran a best of 13.36 but I have yet to switch into 4th at WOT, that might get me to where he is if I can. Check out my cardomain site for a list of mods.

You know everyone rips the heads and cam on the 350 TPI...and they are not great ..but if you look on the LT1 specs they are very close to each other...the real diffrence being the intakes really...
the cams are close in spec between the L98 and the LT1, with a slight advantage in lift #s going to the LT1. however, the heads are COMPLETELY different. the LT1s heads are far better than the L98s in terms of flow. its because of the heads and intake that the LT1s power curves absolutely humble the L98s... and while the L98 does make SLIGHTY more PEAK torque than a LT1, the LT1s torque curve is much broader and useable than the L98s

just wanted to clear up a bit of misinformation... good luck with the 12.9s!

Brandon will hit his 12.9 and If he waits a week or 2 till I get my engine together I'm going to try and run a 11.9 sec. NA TPI next to him at the track. That will be a cool video to show people.

You may have a better shot when the temps and humidity go down. The car always ran its best in October.

Please let me know ASAP after you hit it!! Good luck!!!

hello

I would change the rear gears to 3:73's or 3:90's and get rigde of some rolling weight--each pound of rolling weight is = to 10 lbs of dead weight. To do this I would get an allumiun (cna't spell) drive shaft, drums and lighter rims. I would also take the heads in and have them machined and flowed. Pin the rocker stems to put in stronger springs and a bigger cam. I would also uncork the exaust. heck just the gears might do it

later and

That'd defeat his goal of trying to his 12.99 with stock heads, cam, and bottom end. I think the 3.73s or 3.90s would be a bit too steep for his current setup also. 3.42s maybe. If I remember right, he said he got his hands on a posi 3.45 9-bolt.

STOCK HEADS AND CAM!!!! By having roller rockers i'm already pushing it with I say "stock engine".........I wanna do this on stock untouched heads and cam.....with the bad valve seals!.....Onve I break 12's I will then install afr heads.......

Shaving 5-10 pounds off of a water pump isn't going to make a difference. Rotational mass is what he should focus on. Aluminum driveshaft, lightweight rotors, carbon fiber rims, etc.

LT1 heads are not that much better in flow them L98's....
Stock L98's are are 195cfm or so... stock LT1 are 210-215cfm..not a big deal...
Ported L98's are known to hit close to 260cfm..LT1 around 270 cfm..The LT1 head runs a little bit more compression, then the iron L98....Also the TPI "bathtub" style combustion chamber is not ideal...the intake is what dictates the the torque and horsepower curve..to clear up more misinformation.

This post is getting long and people who dont know need to stay out of it. That was me being nice.

I'll vouch Bradon(winger4800) ran a 13.3 something at 99 on I think it was 1.7something 60ft. Bout 20 of us were there that day.

Only thing I know of not stock is the trans and converter and he added roller rockers the week of the track rental we had on the NW IN/South Chicago board. Has a catback too.

If its smoking and need valve stem seals, they are cheap and easy to replace, oil in the chamber promotes detonation, less u knock, the better u run. (might want to make sure u have enough clearance on them valvetrain wise, u mentioned smoked after the rockers?)

Car is still on factory GM tune, so I know there could be some time had there too. They usually knock when stock and they run rich at WOT to keep the cats alive.

Have you ported the plenum after the TB at the front?

How stock does qualify as stock?

Tim is buying that ported base I did(factory), if that qualifies, ask him to try it for a few weeks to help you out some more yet.

Throw this one out there as a bone to. Last track rental my gf drove my GTA to a 14.4 at 94, letting off the gas thru the traps and running a not so stellar 2.3xxx 60 ft time. Car is stock with the exception of catback and 24# SVO and my own tuning. 1.8x 60's would be easy with some slicks, if I ever get the other car done, I might have to try it.

later
Jeremy

Stock is over rated in these days if i was you I would go all the way. With me I am shooting for high 10's and once I hit in the 10's i will stop. But hit the 12's mark is easy if you have the cash and the time to do it. Good luck in getting there.

Jeremy
Hey Jeremy, this is my old car and my thread I started over three years ago!!! Amazing this is still going!!!

The plenum is fully ported from the TB and matched to the AS&M runners but the Edelbrock base is box-stock. The factory chip was still there when I sold it. I tried a SLP stage II chip but the car ran way slower. Some good power gains will be found if Brandon goes for a "tune on the fly" program and some dyno time. The stock programming is seriously conservative, even for a bone stock car.

The car is lighter than most due to being a Formula and removal of A/C. Other than that, the car was full.

Since the stock TPI stuff is so restrictive on a 350, I would say as long as the bottom end has never been opened including the car, the motor is stock. This is to show the L98 with its 1955 roots is really a good engine if the right parts were designed for it in the first place.

Since I took it over I now have the accel base which appears to more open than the Edelbrock base. I now have as&m semi-siamessed runners (which are creating a vaccumm leak but hopefully I can fix that with a new gasket set within the next week!), trans rebuilt (again!!!!) with vigilante 2400 lock-up stall, A custom burned chip but it was made for the Super Ram intake that I never used and sold......If I get a perfect chip burned I know I can do 12.9 with ease.....i wont need the rear end with a bigger gear that I was planning on installing in 2-3 weeks...The car runs like ****(surging...bogs at lite throttle) but I still pulled off a 13.3... I know once I fixe the bugs it CAN and WILL!!!!! I'm so confident I'll invite ANYONE to come with me to the track........date tba (three weeks?)

Looks like I will be at GLD on this wed (28th) from 6pm-10pm weather permitting.......I installed a used replacement 9-bolt today with a bigger gear. (went from stock 3.27 to 3.45) I also picked up some drag radials and a custom burned-chip.......

I'm still aiming for 12.9........My best was the last time I went to the track (US41) 2 months ago when it was over 90 degrees out and I pulled off 13.3's....

Anyone wanna go with???

Ohhhhh, Brandon is going to hit his 12's mark. So all those people that say it wasnt possible need to admit to Brandon and Formul8 that they were wrong.

I think it is possible as all hell.
'89 Formula 350
I started out at 15.2 on bone stock trim, floormats and all.

Since have added K&N, Airfoil, SLP 1 3/4's, and removed a.i.r. And knocked it clear down to a 14.3.

Now has a Flowmaster catback, removed the A/C except the heat box, backseat, cruise, washer tank, Metco LCA's, and 10.5 ET Streets on Draglites and skinnies. Knocked it down to 13.9 @ 98 with bad air and have yet to crack open a valvecover. 3450 on the scales and still alot of weight to take out and many bolt-on's to add. Need a converter next, 1.94 60' and can't do squat without any launch rpm to improve it.

Cheap mod's I still need to adjust timing, buy an afpr and play with it, and knock the egr wall out of the intake.

i am sure it can happen, hell back in the mid 90s my '88iroc was converted to a 5spd,hooker shorties,no cats,NO ENGINE MODS,perf.resc.chip, crank pulley, cold air pans made behind the fog lights,2.5"y-pipe,borla muffler, autozone clutch, aussi 9 bolt w/3.27s,275/40/17 bfgs(not drag radial)jegs torque arm i ran 13.flat-13.10@106 i am sure if i had a good clutch and some tire it would have run 12s.
most people swore i had a modded motor(internal) or nitrous instead of giving me props for a good runner that had a chip from performance resourcesthe car was quiet and had the most bottom end tq i have encounterd with a small block!
