good cam choice for 305 TPI??

the motor in my car (LO3) is about shot and im putting in a Tuned Port 305 in to get me by until i can get my L98 finished. i just wanted to know what is a good cam to slap in it that will add a good bit of fun to the motor. not looking for something too expensive or with a huge sacrifice n gas mileage. the motor will only be in the car for less than 2 years. closer to 1 year. thanx

You can pick up an LT1 cam for cheap, and that will work nicely in an otherwise stock motor.

I ran a 204/214 @.050, .420/.442 lift cam in my 86 IROC's 305 TPI and it worked well. Nice power increase and it has worked fine with the stock valve springs etc. Mine was a cam taken out of a GM crate 350, but Summit was selling a cam nearly identical to this for cheap. Crane makes a CompuCam (the 2030 I believe) that is almost identical as well. If you require a roller cam something like that LT1 cam as mentioned would be a good idea. I don't remember the specs off hand but I believe it spec'ed out pretty similar to the above specs as well...

thanx for the help. it looks like the cams you recommended all had duration less than 220. is this so i wont loose too much low end? i know the 305 is kinda weak in terms of low end torqe so i want to keep as much as possible and maybe gain quite a bit with the cam. thanx

208/212 @.050, 114, 450/460

Just as a benchmark, a little higher on duration will give you more hp (to a point) and kill some torque, remember dont try to MAKE hp with the cam, when you're only going to get so much air through that TPI intake, the 114 LSA is to "widen" your bower band, you can go 112, or 110 (assuming enough vacuum) and that will make your bower band come into a tall spike in comparison which really isn't useable power. Lift is free money untill you start hitting parts. More lift more power, however you need new springs, and you got to remember how small the 305 bore size is.

I ran a compucam 2030, 305's are prone to knock, If you're going to change the cam I strongly recommend you prepair yourself for prom tuning, I had to set my base timing to 0° just to try to kill some knock after my cam swap

Unfortunatly the engine didn't survive long enough for me to burn proms on. (Spun bearing)

That dosent have alot to do with Maximum lift. More of a Valve Size thing.

I would say go HOT cam. I have a flat tappet variant--same duration, slightly less lift--in my 305 and she does high 13s. Idles and drives fine. I do, however, have a manual trans. If you have an auto you'd want to step up your TC as well.

First impression it was great, pullled right where and how i expected, and up to the RPM's I expected, however It led to detonation and I hadn't started prom burning yet and could only cure it by retarding my distrib. I recommend you prepare for the burning.

the thing is guys it says in my book that the cam 212/212 .444/.444 with 112 lobe seperation does not need a computer chip
but this cam does 212/218 .444/.444 with 114 lobe seperation witch cam will be the best it says that the last cam needs an aftermarket chip
tell me what cam is the best for my 305 tpi 86 ws6 ta

thanks
