EGR and fuel purge ?
Does anyone know how to tell if an EGR is on it's way out ? I read once that if the engine is pinging under acceleration and the timing is set correctly then it is your EGR ? Well I don't want to go buy a new one unless I know for sure.
My fuel cap is only a year old and it is venting gas to the atmosphere. Is this just a defective cap (bought at GM) or is there something up with my fuel canister/purge setup ?
I appreciate hearing any EGR and fuel purge experiences.
thx,
RP.

The best way to test an EGR is to get a vacuum tester. While the engine is running, undo the vacuum line that goes to the top of the EGR. attach the tester to the EGR and pump the tester. If the engine stumbles or stalls then the EGR is toast.
You do get pinging when you accelerate. Its pretty noticable.

the car started to make trouble this morning
I took off form alight this morning and pushed 1st and 2nd then when I coatsed to the next light in 5th the car started to stumble and act like it wanted to stall.
There seems to be about 1/4 to 1/3 less power and the idle is hunting pretty badly. This just out of the blue wham it runs like crap. It feels like a cylinder is not firing cleanly ?
Previous the engine was set at 6 degrees advance and the distributor was rebuilt last year with new plug wires. Not too long ago the car was running super strong and fast it only has 47,000 miles on it. It was pinging noticeably about 3 weeks ago and it got worse with the heat of summer.
Now it runs like crap. Any ideas would be welcome.

When the injectors went bad the car would idle like crap but at 1/2 or WOT throttle it would run normally (had 2 injectors at 5ohms).
It was pinging under load before which made be think it might be EGR related ? I've ordered and EGR just in case. Still, any thoughts would be welcome.
thx,
RP.
