Open element

Has any of the SD users ran back to back runs with a stock or CAI air filter assembly vs like a K&N cone filter open element style setup? I'm currious if picking up heat from the engine has negated the effects of less air ducting for the engine to breath through, or If it balances, or if its an improvement.

If you have any SOTP info feel free to contribute as well

Did this on a MAF car a while ago. No real difference in ET or MPH. Throttle response was totally different. Maybe with tuning there might have been some improvement but as it was, didnt do a damn thing. I guess you could say the hot air negated the gain of no air filter and excess intake ducting.

I agree with madmax. I didn't feel any difference between my stock, cai, or open element.
If there is a difference maybe it can only be seen at the track. I have yet to make it there.

IMO, the stock airbox and snorkle was too restrictive, at least on my 89 305 tpi, so I made an open filter assy. Seems to me that warm air is better than none.

Okay I now have track number differences between CAI and open element.
I ran 6 total times. 3 with CAI and 3 with open element.

The results are.................. CAI won the race by only 1/10 of a second and 1 mph on average.

My CAI is 4 inches in diameter for those that want to know.

Nah. left the stock at home. my cai was made from that 4 inch dryer venting. And yes mine is speed density.

Ahh ok homemade CAI

Cool, thanks for the info.

When my SD is done i'll post the info of a K&N cone vs dual square filter MAF setup with MAF removed and replaced with a tube.
