tell me what you think...
tell me what you think...
Well, I got approx. $1500 to spend on the car, and I intened to go to a heads/cam/intake package.
There are a few things I need to get out in the open first though.
1. I want simplicity
2. I want to be smart about it
3. I really don't have to mess with the computer or custom chips (I have an SLP prom in the car now)
So, off the bat, the first thing that came to mind was Vortec heads, Vortec base and a Crane (Compucam) 214/220 .452/.465 112 LSA (2,000-5,500 rpm range). The heads and the base are already matched as far as bolt holes, surface areas, etc, etc, and it seems to be a proven little combo...nice, stout numbers from each piece. I know the damn Vortec base is friggin expensive. Is it worth the $$? How much HP you think this set-up would add approx? (w/no computer work & stock TB)
Will I need a larger TB? I don't have the $$ to go to a bigger TB but I also dont want it to be a bottle neck. Will I see a signifigant power gain from the Vortec base compared to a fully worked stock base?
I am just tossing around ideas, let me know what you have to say on ANY of the things I mentioned....ie cam selection, etc etc
Also consider mods in sig!!!! THANKS!

If you've got $1500 to spend on your car I'd advise putting $500 away into the "fix the broken part" fund and spending the rest. When you work on these cars things tend to break. Take it from someone who has replaced 90% of his car.
If you don't to do any computer work that really limits you. Anything you do could benefit from a little prom tuning. I wouldn't advise going with a larger throttle body. I don't think you'll see a difference between a vortec and stock base, but what you will see is in the heads. Remember, you don't want to over-cam your setup. The tpi is a good idle-4500 intake, so you'll need some work to raise your rpm range to go with that cam.
If you can afford to have your car undrivable for a while, there isn't anything too bad about porting your stock heads and having them rebuilt with larger springs, screw in studs, larger valves, etc. Otherwise aluminum L98 heads have been proven to be decent with a little work, and you wouldn't need that expensive intake.
