Flame thrower idea w/ computer

Ok, i guess the femi-***** over on the DIY PROM board didn't think this was good enough for there board so they deleted it. Here's the idea.

Wire up a switch that when flipped, grounds out the computers temperature sensor(or makes the computer think the car is running really hot).

Then, modify the BIN in you EPROM so that when the car is running at 260*(which the car should never see) it runs rich. In the "Open loop change to air/fuel vs Coolant temp" table make everything above 250* run really really really rich, thus dumping extra fuel into the engine. How will the computer react to this, am I leaving anything out?

Without cats and spark plugs/coils rigged up in the back, the car should shoot flames like nobodies mama... right?

How does the temperature sensor work to measure coolant temp?

hahahahahahahaha LOL
little fast and the furious goin here.
if u really did that i think it would mess up ur O2 sensor. but clever thinking.

I can see why the prom board deleted the post.

i'm serious, do you guys think it would work?

Sounds good to me. And where will the funeral be held ?

Why not just dump fuel all over your car and light it with a match?

LOL! can somebody explain to me why this wouldn't work, these responses are hilarious.

It might work, but do you really want all that fuel dousing the O2 sensor? DO you really want all that UNBURNT fuel entering your BLAZING HOT catalytic converter? You're just asking for something to go wrong man. If you want to do a flame thrower system, use a small fuel pump hooked up to your tank, and spray the fuel with small nozzles close to the exhaust tips, and use the spark plug/coil setup like you would use for your disaster waiting to happen

Edit: Just realized that there is gonna be fuel sitting in the hose if you do it this way. After the system is used for the first time, fuel will trickle out of the nozzle and drip into the hot exhaust pipe.....

i stated without cats hooked up. This idea is really any different than what the carburated guys do. It seems to me to be the same as a carburater running really rich.

Why not just weld a nozzle into your exhaust? Run a fuel line to it through a nitrous fuel solenoid and it would even be relatively safe since no fuel would flow without the solenoid energized. Voila easy flamethrower.

If I rember right, my shop teacher in high school was a child of the 50's and he did the same thing with a carburated car. You might want to put the plugs in the tips near teh rear of the muffler and try it with out anyother changes and see if that works. You could just try and pump up your fuel pressure 5pts and experiment with that. If you do this, make sure you do it one step at a time and put the plugs at the end of the exhaust.

so nobody can tell me why this wouldn't work, they're just speaking out of their a**?

hhmm, it might work, but there is an easier way to do it, just not sure how

Sounds too me like it would work fine.

I'm not too sure why so many people came up with snotty responses, but no reasons why.

Hmmm...

that sounds like it'll work and it's easier i wouldn't mind tryin that myself

This is a reason why it would not work, cause you been watching to much tv.:lala: :lala:

You're making this too complicated. Carb guys would do it by shutting the choke. I'd do it the same way with EFI. Rather than have the switch ground it and try top kludge the fuel in at extreme temp, i'd have the switch open the circuit, making the ECM think i just crash landed in barrow alaska. Boom, you're in open loop, and all you have to do is make the coldest value's in %AFR vs. coolant (or similar) just a little more extreme and there's your extra fuel. Could give you problems if your CTS opens on it's own, or fails, and you'd want all the wiring and connections ot be as clean as possible to keep it accurate for the ECM. I'd eliminate those issues by only using the feature chip at cruises, summertime, etc.
Hooking up a coil and a plug in the exhaust is self-explanatory.

Those of you suggesting fuel nozzles in the exhaust pre-qualify for nominations for the darwin awards. I'm sure somebodie's done it. I'm also sure there are 10 char-burgers for every functioning example.

Ground the O2 sensor wire while in closed loop. That should set the BLM to 160 and that's enough fuel to foul the plugs in about five minutes. The other thing you could do is rig a wire to the injector control circuit so you could intermittently (and quickly) ground it for the extra fuel. Guaranteed liquid lock if you hold it too long. But, why would you run that much fuel through the engine? Wash out, fouled plugs, blacked out exhaust, etc.. There has to be a better way that's less damaging to the engine. It's your money and your car, but why damage something just for a show?

And BTW, you mean to tell me that you have the prom burning equipment and all that you can come up with is to make a flame thrower out of it? No wonder the post got deleted.

I for one would just think that something was horribly wrong with the car and the driver must be an idiot for not noticing.

It'll work fine. It's a great idea. Go ahead and do it tomorrow. Take lots of pics. Get before and after dyno results. Track your 1/4 mile perforamce including MPH with and without it. I'll host the tech article for you when it's done.

Yeah, looking back it was kinda harsh, but it's in the Top 2 Stupidest Things Ever right behind the guy who fabricated a "roll cage" from PVC pipe trying to sneak past the tech guy at his local drag strip.

The difference between that and this guy's idea is the cage guy will only hurt himself, the flame-out-the-tailpipe guy might take some innocent bystander out with him.
