changing shift points on auto trans

how would you raise the shift points of an automatic trans? i plan to siamese my base manifold in my Vette soon, and ive had my best track times by leaving my trans in D while racing instead of shifting it manually. problem is it shifts at 4800 rpms, which is ok for now, but after i siamese the intake ill want to rev higher to take advantage of the increased airflow. how do i go about doing this? is it in the PROM, or can i raise the shift rpms by adjusting the throttle cable? thanks

I don't know about the 700r4, but i modified the th350 in my Chevelle by changing weights and springs in the servo on the side. B&M makes a kit for it. It shifts automatically at 5800 rpm in drive at full throttle and around 2000 at part throttle. But like I said, I don't know if the 4 sprrd auto works the same. If it is, It's easy to do.

The 700R4 works the same way as TH350. Change the governor weights & springs.

Check a local tranny shop. Ask them about the V6 springs for the govenor. They will give you a higher RPM shift point.

I was able to get my 700 to shift differently by adjusting the TV cable. BUT unlike changing weights and chit it really messes up the shifting. Move it back and forth and find out if there's something you like.
I ended up moving mine back. I was unhappy with the results.

I'd be careful with the TV cable. I believe it controls a lot more than just the shift points/kickdown and you could end with more problems than you started with.

Call Dana with Pro-built and he will give you good advice and should have the parts you are looking for.

I looked into this a little while ago, and there are 3 stock governors of interest. An ~5k in the TBI cars. 5.5k in most TPI and 6k in the V6s. Somehow i ended up owning one of each which will come in handy down the road. Unfortuneatly i don't have any part numbers though, but you should be able to find it knowing the 3 types of cars you'd see it in.

Or there are recalibration kits that have you change weights and springs inthe governor. I've heard it's best to start with a new one if you're going to mod one. This way you always have a back up, apparently sometimes used governors don't like to be messed with much after they've ran forever. Seems like a good idea. I had a hung TV valve that acted just like a sticky governor would, and it is no fun at all.

Changing the governor is easy On the back driver's side corner of the trans there is a circular dust cover (just like the ones on wheel bearings, just bigger). Just get a screwdriver/chisel and tap it out from behind. Be gentle, it doesn't take much.

The governor then just pulls straight out. Have something clean to hold it in. The new one should be kept clean too, it's a precision valve after all.

Slide the new one in, then put the dust cover back on. Evenly tap the cover back on.

It's a very simple operation really. I've had mine in and out so many times, it's a less than 5 minute job. I jack it up just in front of the driver's rear wheel. Throw a stand under it. Crawl under. Put a piece of newspaper down for the tranny fluid that will come. It's not a whole lot, and sometimes dry, but it can be a few ounces. The key is jacking it at the back corner, so that is the HIGH side of the tranny. If you jack it at the front, or even use ramps, you can end up with a stream , in which case you better work quick (usually happens the first time you do it, and you don't take this simple advice, lol)

BTW, the TV cable is not the right way to adjust shift points. Just keep it adjusted properly and you'll be set. At best you might have 1 or 2 clicks of leeway to make it shift a little harder/later before the self adjuster kicks in.
