Code 44

My service light came on my 88 IROC and when I checked it was a code 44 showing. I was wondering what may cause this - would it be a gas cap not properly tightened?

code 44 is running lean. Check your O2 sensor, probably should replace it. Also, have you recently installed headers?

I did not recently install headers (which ones would be good by the way), but I have noticed a distinct gas smell. Could it be an exhaust leak? If so, which are some good spots to look for one?
