timeing

recently installed comp cam #08-304-8, 210/220 duration, 500/510 lift , 114 degree center line with 1.6 roller rockers. when setting the static timeing engine will shut down before reaching the 6 deg BEFORE mark, but, will run at 4 deg after mark and that is with the tan wire disconnected. When engine is shut down and restarted dist can be moved without any problems. what can be the cause of this?

not trying to come across as a smart ***, but do you want to know why it shuts off at 6*btdc or Why the dist will turn.

Let us know and we will try to help.

If you're going by the stock balancer's timing mark, it could be way off. The outer ring on stock balancers tend to "walk" around as the thing gets old. Get yourself a degree wheel and see if it's accurate. Chances are that either the balancer is off, or your timing gears aren't right. Thje only way to be sure is to degree the cam and check the balancer with the wheel as well.

Could you guys give me a hand. This may be the "bonehead of the month award", but I need some help. I'm doin head gaskets, rebuilt head, and headers, so: My buddy came over and took my distributor out one day before I got home from work. He came back last night to help me put it back in, and could not remember how it should go back in. He didn't make any marks on the distributor so we don't know how to put it back in. I have the #1 piston at tdc, but I guess I need to figure out where the rotor should be pointing to fire the #1 cylinder. Needless to say, this buddy didn't get any free beer last night. Anyone who can help me can have his beer though!!! Thank you.

The rotor should be pointing at #1 terminal on the cap. The order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2. Number one can be any terminal on the cap you want it to be. Just make sure the plug wire, cap, rotor and cylinder are matched up.
