doin the old swaperoo and have some questions

now before i get bombarded with the "search" reply, i have tried several times with no results on some of these questions

i am swapping a TPI 350 in my current 1991 RS 3.1
i just bought the engine, so theres no turning back
(besides if i try to sell the car:
1. it has 200,000 miles
2. the most i could get is $1000
3. i want to do an engine swap
4. it would take me forever to sell it)

i want to know:
can i remove PASS-KEY altogether?

i am going to try to use my currect 3.1 harness, since 99% of the connectors are the same

as for the 2 extra injectors, i have looked at TPI schematics and it shows (that since these are batch-fire engines) that each injector DOES NOT go into the ECM

instead each cylinder back has a power and a ground and each injector feeds off these.........

if you dont understand i can attach a schematic

i just thought about this: i am able to reuse the harness, passkey shouldnt cause me any headaches

i am not going to be running a smog pump nor an EVAP system

(i know you will say that my SES light will always be lit, but i dont care)

can i use a 1987 LG4 distributor with the TPI setup?

i dont see why not, but i figure i'd make sure

i am leaving the car T5 equipped.....would the 350 TPI PROM work ok? or should i get a custom chip

let me note, this is my daily driver, so all-out ***** to the wall power isnt a nessacity right now.

thanx

Ill give as much info as I can, the injector wiring is correct so you shoould be able to wire in 2 more injectors, however if the ecm is designed to control 3 per side instead of 4 not sure what possible problems would be caused there, easiest way to make sure, see if there is any difference in part #'s for an ecm for 350/3.1 the proms are most likley going to be diff. but otherwise wiring shouldnt be a problem knock sensors will be different,

if the 87 lg4 dist is the same small one it should work, mine was the same from the monte to the iroc,

putting a 350 stock or not infront of that trans is most lilkey going to cause premature death, they werent designed for the torque, thats why there was nothing bigger than the 305 in front of them, and I think internally a v6 tranny and a 305 tranny are diff but someone can correct me there if Im wrong.

most of all with enough research to see whats different or same then you should be able to make this work, just check on differences in the computers would be the biggest thing, you may ask craig moates on here and see if he can answer anymore q's about that, hes one of the "guru's" when it comes to the ecm's

I did basically the same swap in my 89(2.8). my buddy actually wired around the vats relay in the drivers side kick panel, but I would have to ask him exactly what needs to be done. I don't know much about wiring so I just bought a complete engine harness out of a 88 iroc and swaped them. I think I paid about $100.00 and it basically plugged into place of the old harness. If your good with wiring you could probably keep and update your v6 one. I didn't use any smog crap except the egr and I didn't have any codes. I don't know about the distributor but if it's computer controlled it might work. I would ask about the chip on the prom or motor swap board but I'd say a stock 350 chip would make a good starting point. Good luck with it and I hope this helped.

ok thanx dude, for the injectors...........the ECM is the same between V8 and V6 speed density TPI cars......its the PROM thats different

as for the tranny i know.........but i need the overdrive cuz its my daily driver.............i have a TH350 going into my Z28........and i have a toasted 700R4 in my garage.......and i have a toasted T5 in my garage..........i'm not planning on beating on this car until i get the swap and my Z28 to the point where i want it so i can buy another car that will be my daily driver and the viscious cycle will start all over again

seriously though, thanx!

if you have a 700 thats just toasted as far as clutches, go buy a haynes gm tranny book, read it 2-3 times, then go get a tci (or any other this is just what I used) trans rebuild kit, and go to town, there is parts where it says you need a special tool to compress the springs (dont remember what they are called but if you look Im sure you will see it, there is a ring with 10 or so springs all together) but you can create something to do it with a little creativeness, I spent 3 days from removal to reinstall to rebuild mine and it was the first time I ever did it. But if your easy on it, then you should be ok with the T5.

before you attempt this swap definatley make sure you have plenty of time off from work and a secondary vehicle just in case everything goes wrong. I did 305 tbi to 350 tpi swap in just 1 1/2 days but it took a month or so to work out all the glitches. granted I could only work on the car 1 day a week, but I did not prepare for the worst. Vats should not be a problem even if you keep it as is, my lo3 distributer works just fine on the l98 (but I don't know about the lg4), good luck with the t5 tranny. For sure it won't be long before it doesn't work anymore. To be honest with you, you might be better off getting a 91 sd tpi harness and computer from www.tacreationsusa.com. I think the tranny swap will be easier with this wiring harness vs. your current one but no too sure. Good luck!!!!!!

well, for the trans, i'm prolly going to put a T56 in there whenever i can afford to, i cant afford it right now, and with nearly 200,000 miles, this little 6 popper aint gonna last forever

as for having a second car, i will, i'll be driving the Z28.........i just need to put in the TH350 and finish the exhaust on the Z28 first before i start the swap
