External Coil to Top Mount Swap

Okay so the guys '87 and up TPI have the externaly mounted coil. Personally I think it's alot more ugly than my '85 top mount coil.

Well since my '85 is totalled, and I have this Performance cap/rotor/coil from hyper tech...... is it possible to just put the top mount distributor into an '87 car with external mount coil?

All it looks like I'd have to do is make my '85 4 wire plug... adapt to the 4 wire plug from the '87... and then put the two clips from the '87 onto the power and tach clips of my '85.

BUT will it work the same is my question?!

It'll work fine. If you examine your harness, you'll see that both cars even have the exact same wire colors in the harness. There's a total of 4 wires in the harness. If I were you I'd keep the small coil though. It's easier to work on, it allows you to tip the motor farther back without pulling the cap (which is nice if you have as many transmission problems as I do ), and it will clear the Super Ram and Holly Stealth Ram, so it gives you flexibility in the future. Oh.. it also makes ignition upgrades easier because you've already got the remote coil. It's not like the coil looks that bad anyway. Just keep it clean.

I'll play devil's advocate and tell you to go ahead and swap to the bg cap dizzy. It has a couple of advantages over the small cap piece that IMO make it more desireable.

1- large cap. More space between plug wires. Less chance for crossfire

2- large cap. More volume of air. That makes it harder to overheat and excessively ionize the air under the cap, which accelerates corrosion. This is a very real problem that i've had on my 92, i've cleaned my cap/rotor at least 3 or 4x so far this year. My 85 with a large cap never had such issues.

3- easier to set the timing on a large cap piece since it has the handly coil bulk head **** to grab. Ok, this is a relatively dumb thing to point out, but in the dark it is easier to grab and turn then the connectors on the base of a small cap dizzy. And if you like to TnT your car at the track this comes in handy.

As for having more clearance for other intakes...save the stocker for if you run one in the future. As for more clearance when leaning the engine, i wouldn't leave the dizzy in if i was pulling the tranny anyway. Much more room (and less worry about destruction) if you just take it out.
