questions about the infamous L98...

I was wondering if anyone else has to change their plugs twice a year, and clean the dist. cap every 4 or 5 mths??? I have all accel ignition, except fot the NGK plugs(this time), even an accel dist. contol module. My timing is set at 10* base, and about 30* at 3000rpm. Could my timing be fouling my plugs early? The engine is in perfect shape with only 87,000 mi on it. Also, with the better ignition I have, should I gap my plugs a little wider? say about .045 instead of .035???? Any info would be great. Thanks.

What kind of plugs were you running before the NGK's? Accel is not my favorite brand. Thier cap and rotors are good but anything else I will go MSD. Try going back to Delco plugs. Chevys love em.

I had Rapidfire's before that. I've tried them all over the years. I have the Accel super stock 9mm wires also. I just drove it a min ago to the store, and I was messing with a guy in one of those chrysler 300M's at the light, and when the light turned green, I stomped it, and it hesitated pretty bad. It seems to idle ok(well when the IAC lets it...). It just seems to hesitate on the lower rpm band. On the higher side, it still screams. So far I have ruled out anything fuel related. It needs an O2 sensor, but I dont think that would have too much to do with it. Im just wondering if it's my timing being too advanced.......hmmm Also, the other day I got it in to go to work, and it took FOREVER to start. Thats the first time it's ever done that. I have a brand new battery and a 3mth old NEW alternator. It hasnt done it since, but Im wondering also if my dist. hold down came loose and the dist moved on me????? Im stuck....

I have nothing but bad experiences with accel ignition products and i'm betting thats the problem with your car. I've installed no less than 3 accel ignition products on my GTA and i ended up removing all of them. Accel cap/rotor kits have a tendency for having the top of the rotor scrape the "ceiling" of the cap when the motor is running and get plastic dust all over the contacts underneath the cap, causing your car to run like crap. I, along with several other people, know this from experience. I'm guessing this is what you are having to "clean off". I used one of those so-called performance ignition modules accel has and it caused an immediate hard-start problem. Yes i remembered to put the dielectric grease on the back of it. I replaced it with the old delco unit and it fires right up again. I used their ignition coil and i don't if it "hurt" my performance but it gave my tach fits above 3K. Tossed an MSD unit in its place. Tach functions again. Now it sucks that accel is the only company out there that makes shorty header plugs (they haven't messed up yet.....). As for your spark plugs, just go to Kragen or anyother parts house and grab a pack of regular ACs and you should be fine. In regards to your timing, did you happen to hear any audible knock or preignition when the car hesitated? If anything, your timing is too retarded and/or your having a fuel delivery problem (TPS, fuel filter, weak fuel pump, etc etc).

well, I figured it out today. My timing has been readjusted, and was WAY off from a few months ago, meaning the hold down came loose. I reset the timing to 10* base, and 32total at 3100rpm. I then learned that when the timing is changed that much from stock, that the TPS has to be turned down a notch. Its set at .52volts, instead of .54 to .56 stock. It seemed to really help. I think the higher setting was letting the ecm think the throttle was more engaged than it was. All's well now. I am changing to MSD though, as you are not the first to tell me about Accel. It seems everybody has a bad opinion of them........
