1le fuel tank
i was wondering when they started putting the tanks with the baffles like the 1le's have in all the cars. i have an 89 iroc and want to road race with it and am needing to know if i need the whole tank or just the 1le pickup?
and yes i already did a search.
thanks

I just picked up a tank out of a 91 GTA and it is definately baffled. The pickup looks different also, but and gaging that from memory when I changed my fuel pump last year. When I change my 87 tank out for this one I'll post pic of the sending units side by side to show any differences.
So, not just 1LE's that got baffeled tanks.

from what ive read.... in the YEAR 1990 regular production cars started getting the tanks regardless if it was 1LE or not...
im 90% sure that my 91 does NOT have it though...

Sorry, i'm not a lot of help. This is one piece of thirdgen trivia that has slipped my mind over the years.
I just wanted to add before someone asks, there is no such thing as the 18gallon 1LE tank that you might see mentioned in some literature. Might even be in the FAQ of this site. If such a thing existed, noone has EVER documented it. The GM PN that you'll get if you look-up the gas tank for a 1LE car is the same PN they'd give you if you asked for a tank for a TBI RS. Normal capacity, baffled.
And as already mentioned, once the general went to baffled tanks, all cars got 'em. There could easily be exceptions if a non-baffled tank was left over in the parts pile that day though.

I was under the impression that ANY multi-port injected car got baffled tanks as a matter of necessity. This is a big issue when retro-fitting older cars to modern EFI. Fuel slosh at less than a 1/4 to 1/2 tank can cause all sorts of stalling problems.

yup... and since my car isnt baffled, anytime its low on gas and i corner hard, brake hard, accel hard, or ESP when i brake hard and corner hard and then try to power out of a turn, it stumbles... i had it stall a couple times when trying to whip into the gas station too fast.... heh.
id love to swap some form of baffled tank in there..... athough id love to keep the tank full all the time too..

Well I looked for any 90 an up car to get a tank out of , GTA or otherwise. And this was the only one I found that was intact. Found a bunch of them at one yard, but their local laws require they either remove the tank completely from the car, or punch a hole it it. So, they had many tanks with holes in them, but not one good one. Too bad also. Would have been $15 and not $70 for it.
As to whether or not all 90 and newer cars got baffled tanks, I can't either confirm or deny that from my search for a replacement tank. I just know that this one from a 91 GTA did have a baffled tank in it. That's why I specified it was a GTA I got my tank from. I hope someone else with a standard car (not GTA-1LE) 90 and up pulls a tank to confirm they have baffles in them. For me my search for a fuel tank is over. Now just have to put the darn thing in.

random 1/4 mile calc i used:
Car weight: 3500 lbs.
Horsepower: 300 hp
Configuration: Rear Wheel Drive
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results
Quarter Mile Acceleration: 14.325 seconds.
Terminal speed: 103.1907 mph.

tenth in the 1/4 can be a big deal........

wow, i figured this thread was dead.
anyway,
my 87 iroc did not have baffles in the tank, anything under a 1/4 caused the dreded right turn cut out. my 89 does have the baffled tank because i have run it as low as a gallon and a half at full speed while turning right with no cut out (i dont usually run it that low, the gas gauge said i had just under a hlaf a tank), so they must have started going to it in 89 or late 88.
thanks

Well before you go to GM and start ordering parts, look at the price list in this thread for the parts needed for the conversion. Might be best to go hunt one down out of a junk yard like I did. Much cheaper. $70

If I remember right, my 92 RS L03 had the baffled tank. It's also been ~2 years since I had it down though, so I could be mistaken.
My 85 definately did not have them. I also never had a problem with fuel slosh causing the car to stall, but I also never let it drop below 1/4 tank for fear of overheating the pump
Let us know what you find out,
Matt

theres a rather good chance that the baffled tank superceded the orignal non baffled one for replacement.........
id order one for a 92 and look at what comes....

gm part number for the only fuel tank they list is 1026091. list is 440.15. that is for the 4cyl and 8 cyl. the 6 cyl is discontinued. what was said above about the new tanks supercieding the old part is most likely true.
thanks
