383 guys....please help

I need some intake and head suggestions for my 383 project...I was gonna put the LS1 in, but decided to stick with a tried and true 350....sort of. Im having my old 700R4 rebuilt to handle the torque(also Ill be more consistent than with the T56) My block as of right now is being bored .030, and having new bearings put in, etc. I have the 383 rotating assembly sitting here staring at me till tomorrow Im going with the cast crank and Keith Black hypereutectic slugs. My question is though, since the stock intake and heads WONT work well with a 383 since it needs alot of air, what could I use? Should I use alum or cast heads? Im also in the process of spending $3000 to get my car prepared for the motor(suspension, rear end, tranny), and Im looking into getting an 11sec car....is that unreasonable? I think if I can get the suspension just right, it may be faster.....My friends S10 with a 355 camel hump headed motor runs 11's and the heads have the original valves and springs but his suspension is on the money(1.70 60fts)no kidding!! sorry this is sooo long, just like to hear what you 383 guys have in mind or are running......thanks in advance

me too

i'm going to have a 383 too......

try to get some good aluminum heads so you can run a little more compression......

also if ya want fi go with the stealth so it dosen't smother what you have like stock tpi would.......

try afr's for heads and a comp xe282hr up cam..... that should give near 500hp flywheel....

did you get clearenced rods??? it might hit the cam if you didn't.....

when you start building it right after you get your crank in put the cam and timing chain on to make sure it dosen't, if it does you might have to get a small base grind one like me......

i'm also from ky!!!!

Well, I got my block back today, had the crank, rods, and pistons put in. Looks like everything will clear, so far anyway. I also ordered the Arizona Speed semi siamesed runners, 54mm TB and got done porting whats left of the plenum... What do you guys think about the Edelbrock TPI base???? I still havent decided on heads or cam yet, but I think the cam I want should have at least a 530lift, 112-116lsa and around 290/302 duration. ALso, how big of an injector will I need to feed this motor??? Keep the suggestions coming guys.....I cant wait to get this thing running again...and show the Fast and the Furious guys next door to me what an engine is SUPPOSED to sound like and run....hehe

Well, Im think I made a decision on some more parts, tell me if this is a good decision or not. I may decide to go with Jegs alum. heads with 220 cc intake ports and 64cc CC w/angle plug. With dome slugs, comp is about 9.7:1 and flat-top would be around 10.9:1....Would that be too much for alum heads??? Im going to try to stick with the "stock" Tpi setup for now, just to see what Im looking at, but I have ported the stock base extensively as well as the plenum and Im thinking about getting the larger 58mm TB. With a cam around .530lift and 114-116lsa, I think it would be a monster........Or am I being silly?

The jegs heads are canfield's so they are good heads. The 220cc heads are alittle to big for street use the 197cc would be a better choice. What type of pistions are you using?

Well, I thought the 383 needed alot of air....So I thought Id go a little bigger than too small. Will 24lb injectors work good or should I go to 26lb?? Its not gonna be driven on the street too much, but I am driving it to the Bristol Bash next year. But you think a 200cc head would be sufficient?? Are Edelbrock heads any count? I was kinda looking at the performer rpm heads......Im using Flat-top pistons(Keith Black hyper) I really appreciate all the suggestions and help....

well i have a 383, and when i built it i was thinkin street, if i could do it over again, i would go AFR210cc alum. heads, i currently have s/r torquer II heads, 170cc runners, before i bolted my supercharger on, it was only like a 13.5 car, i was mad, but the charger brought it to a best of 11.7 on nitto's, soon i will have the lt1 intake bolted on and next spring i will have better times.... just remember, if you go BIG! you can always add more ****.. I.E. NOS, charger, big lumpy stick.. but if you do what i did, you will have to buy heads twice, for all my future mods. i am going with afr 227cc next year.... 10s here i come! hope that helped

Pick a head that flows the most air at the lifts that are practical for you, most likely around .550 lift. If you go to CHP and look at their flow numbers from all the heads they have you'll find that a 190-200 cc head will flow the most air at the lift values most street motors run.

227cc heads are BIG most people use them 400s or larger or drag only cars.On the AFR site it says for the 227cc 4500rpm and up_220cc 4500rpm-8500rpm_210cc 3000rpm-7500rpm_195cc 2000rpm-6500rpm.The cast crank and hyper pistions are not made to spin to crazy RPMs.The 210cc would be the largest to use if its going to be driven on the street. LPE uses ported vette heads that are only 182cc on their 383 engines.

Maybe to help you compare I own a 355 and a 385, the 355 is in my car right now and its running 200cc Intake heads and a 224/230 .512 cam In a daily driver, and I mean very daily, the 385 will probably get some heads in the 200-210 range, as for whether to go cast or aluminum I think thats a function of compression, since the 355 is below 10:1 its running cast, and the 385 is over 10:1 I'm going aluminum.
