is 305 good enough?
i have a 305 TPI with low mileage -54000 in my iroc...i had in mind that i would eventually get a new intake, heads, and cam at least...is this usually something done to a 305 or would it make more sense to swap the engine to a l98 or a crate or somethin?...if a 305 is doable does nayone make good 305 heads that require no alteration? should i keep my stock heads? the focus is always on 350's and i know so many people have 305's so...any info on 305 upgrading/rebuilding....i dont think im ready for any internal modifications like pistons/block stuff....thanks

All I can say is do a search. Basically you asked a question that is going to get mixed answers. Yes, anything is doable with a 305, it just involves money. Now on the other hand, if you did it with a 350 you'd get better results. Like I said, it just depends on how much money you want to spend. Swaping out the heads(World 305 torquers), cam and intake mods will definatly liven the 305 up. But try a search, your going to get more info than you can possibly imagine.
Good luck.
Good luck.
My advice would be to keep that low mileage 305 in the car and save your money. By the time it needs work, you'll have enough cash to build whatever you want. That gives you time to research the 305 buildup to see if it's worth it or not for your goals. I'm happy with the way my 305 turned out for just a little effort and money, but my car is just a daily driver to go to work in. I have other cars for going fast in.

If you want power then you should do as I am doing.
Start modding the 305 but use all parts that will swap onto the 350/383 when you are able to do that. I.E. all exhaust parts are swapable to a 350 so are any intake modifications you do. I even went as far as to get some TPI vette aluminuim heads and put those on. they have the same chamber size as the 305 cast iron heads so you don't lose any compression. I put a cam in my 305 too. That prolly won't accompany the 350/383 when it goes in but I want to drive the 305 for a while longer so it seemed like a good idea.
In my experience... do the exhaust mods first. It really wakes up the 305 and gives a much better sound too.

I'll have some new times soon with the new heads and cam.

Just do mods that will cary over to a 350 when your motor gets some more mileage on it. It would be a shame to toss it out with such low miles. L98 aluminum heads would be a great investment as I have some listed in the for sale section.
Headers would carry over well to a 350 and work on your 305.
A deeper set of gears would be nice as well.
All three things mentioned will cary over to the 350 but get some use out of your 305.
If you have the extra money to spend though definetly go for the 350 now but I suggest even to start trying to find a buyer for the 305 while its in the car running. Someone will more likely buy it if they can hear and see it run.
