Vortec Heads- Buying Question
Vortec Heads- Buying Question
I was thinking...I know you can buy remanufactured engines and parts at parts stores like AutoZone, or Advanced, ect. Has anyone tried to buy the Vortec heads there?? They have to be cheaper than new GM.
I would imagine all you have to say is you need cylinder heads for a 98 Chevy Truck?????
Anyone know this, or know exactly what year and model they come off of so I can call????
Thanks
Tom

The vortec heads came on 1996-1998 Chevy 1500 trucks with the 5.7L. The desireable head has -062 as the last digits of the casting number. Stay away from the -996 if possible. It is a vortec head but flows less than the -062 heads. The spring seats will have to be cut and a larger spring installed to run a cam with a lift over .450 lift.
Okay they make 062 's and 906's but I've never seen 996's.What is the basis of your comment that 1 flows better than the other ? I have never put them on a flow bench, but have had these 2 heads side by side disassembled and cannot see a difference. Have you ever had either 1 of a flow bench?? probably not.
I think probably what he is talking about is in the January 2003 Chevy High Performance. They do say to stay away from the 906 castings because of a hardened exhaust seat that kills low and mid lift flow numbers.
I honestly thought that the 906 and 062 heads were the same.
I guess I learned something.....

kwik is right. I read that same issue of chevy performance.I was about to post a new topic on this but i see someone already brought it up. I have a question i didn't see answered in the chevy article
Will the vortec heads fit on a tpi 5.7? They said the vortecs have an 8 bolt pattern and i have a 12, or so it said i think.
Ever since i rode in my friend's chevy 1500 5.7 w/ hurst shifter, I've wanted these vortec heads. Just can't beat the torque for 500 bucks.

i know the feeling. my friend has a truck with those heads and it really moves on the torq side. but i gotta wait until income tax to get my tpi changeover and the vortech heads but no baseplate ,until now. here you go guys, this is at the www.sdpc.2000.com website.its under fuel system, once yur there,go to intake manifolds, then go to sdpc TPI Vortec baseplate the part # is 12498060 and the EGR install kit # is SD3816 if you get there before me let me know how this wakes up the tuned port setup. hey guys is a complete tpi setup (ecm, wireharness, motor, intake and fuel pump, basically everything needed to change a tbi 350 to a tpi setup.) is this worth 650.00 its coming out of a 91 GTA With FRont end Damage.and how hard is the change over.
so i have to get the tpi vortec baseplate to use vortec heads?
When my friend shifts into 3rd in his truck @ 45mph the rear tires jump way off the ground. Its a very violent ride when he wants it to be.

I would not be too upset. I know lots of people that are running them with great results.
If I came across a set cheap, I would still buy them. I would imagine worst case senario, you do a little porting to them.....
