Question for Vader

Vader, In a post about intake R&R you mentioned the following: "Without removing the heads, you can install screwed rocker studs, and have a very good chance of cleaning up the chips/debris with the intake removed." By this do you mean to pull the pressed in studs and then drill? and tap the bosses for screw-in studs with the heads still on the car? Is this something that is fairly easy to perform? Mostly worried about alignment if any drilling is needed. But then I suppose the existing hole would guide the drill bit. Thanks in advance.

Luxor,

There is no need to drill the holes for screwed studs. The factory "pull-out" studs are 3/8" in diameter (0.375"). The screwed studs most often use a 7/16-14 UNC thread on the lower ends, and the correct tap drill size for a 75% thread at 7/16-14 is 0.375", so you're all set once the studs are removed.

Here's a short article on the procedure:

Thanks Vader! Looks to be a pretty straight foward operation.

I cannot stress enough the need to keep everything as clean as possible. Stuff all the oil drainbacks and push rod holes with towels, packing, or whatever you can use. Cover everything. Use magnets to catch/trap/pickup all the shavings you generate. Clean all the parts and inspect them before you reassemble the valve train.

The collarless studs are good for this type of retrofit, but will not work with guide plates. If you ever change to guide plates for non-self aligning rockers, the heads would have to be removed for machining anyway. The hex-collared studs tend to deflect a bit less, but unless you are into lifts over 0.525" or so, and are running some wicked stiff valve springs (over 180# seat pressure), the collarless studs should work fine for you.

Thanks again Vader, I don't have to worry about debris getting in to the engine since the heads are sitting on the bench awaiting a port and polish. I'am building a 355 to replace the worn 305 in my 91 Formula. As for the lift, I'll problably be running the 049 L98 cam (88-89) with 1.6 rockers with new stock springs which should suffice - (correct?).The plenum with be ported as well as some opening of the intake. The extra set of runners may get operated on as depicted in the "Runner Glue" thread. I'am waiting for that one to come to conclusion before I decide. All of this work won't happen until March 03. Other reponsibilities are calling right now. If my abilities meet my expectations as far as air flow I may go higher with the cam selection but then I'll just have to wait and see.
