problems, need help FAST(long)
My car will not start. The car tries to start and may run for a second then just dies. If I start it and hold the pedal down it will start then it just dies. Sometimes while cranking and pumping the pedal it backfires. There was also some puffs of smoke coming from the rear of the engine. When running the rpms also suddenly jump to 4000, like its being revved up. It never runs for more than 5 seconds.
I've just finished working on the car. I replaced the EGR valve, the driver side intake runer from a '86, the driverside fuelrail out of a '86 with the cold start injector fitting and the cold start injector. My engine is a '89 but I had to put the cold start stuff in because my ECM is a '85. The runner of the '86 has a extra "little" tube running in the middle of the runner between the 2nd and 3rd tube. The passenger side is also like that(it's still the '89 runner). I noticed on the plenum there is no fitting or hole for this extra tube. I plugged it with pipe putty(the stuff plumbers use to seal leaks, it gets real hard). I had removed the plenum and throttle body and runner a couple times. I believe all the vacuum hoses a hooked up. Is it possible that the putty got sucked into the manifold and is clogging the engine up? Is it possible my MAF is bad and causing this, I pulled a code 34 yesterday. Or could oil from the o-rings be clogging the injectors?
Any ideas?
I need help quick.
Wednesday was when I put the runner, fuel rail, and coldstart injector in. Thursday it ran, but funny. Thursday one of the o-rings in the crossover tube was leaking so I fixed that, today (Friday) I put in the EGR valve. Now it don't work. Please help. If you need clarifying or you have questions feel free to e-mail me. Be aware I don't have the means or skill to get vaccuum readings or other diagonostic readings. I can only get codes.
Please help, I'm out of ideas.

what is your air temp outside (weather temp) when you are trying to start it.
What year is your plenum from. Maybe your plenum is the post cold start injector style. If it was, and its cold out, your car is trying to start with the cold start injector, but the hole to supply air is plugged, so its dumping fuel in, but no air.
Get an 86 plenum.
Those little runners between 2 & 3 supply the air to mix w/ the gas that the cold start injector supplies.

I put the '86 plenum in but it still won't start. The engine will run for a sec then die. If I hold the throttle it will run, but very rough. Once I let go of the throttle it dies. I also smell something burning, like oil. The car seems to want to start but can't because of lack of fuel(or maybe spark). Is it possible when I replaced the fuel rail, oil from the o-rings on the rail and injectors got onto or into the injectors and its clogging them? Could the injectors need cleaning?
O yeah, that hose from the "pcv valve" like thing on the passenger side valve cover has oil in it. The hose runs to the very top hose connection on the throttle body(above the vaccuum and coolant ones.) Is oil on there normal?
Could someone post a pic of the hose connections to the throttlebody and plenum so I can see if I have things mixed up?
Thanks
Matt

I haven't pulled the plugs yet. What is blow-by? Tomarrow I'm gonna get some starting fluid and check for vaccuum leaks.
I'll let you know what I find.
Thanks for the help and advice.

Bad blow-by:What other signs should I look for? Why did it start to affect the engine in this way at that time? Would that cause the engine not to stay running?
Also, I checked fuel pressure:around 40psi when running, starts to diminish slowly when engine is off. Also, when engine is off and I hit the pressure release/bleeder button very little gas comes out, about one or two ounces maybe. Nowhere near enough to go through the hose. Also sprayed starting fluid around the manifold to check for vaccuum leaks and I didn't find any.
Could the MAF be the problem? Would a MAF out of a '86 work?
