Need help with rich problem
Need help with rich problem
No, not too much money rich. I had the LT1 intake moded and put on my 305. I also installed an LT1 cam, Torquer heads, AFPR, Ed Wright chip. It runs real rich. I have the stock 19lbs injectors in it and the fuel pressure is set at around 38lbs right now. It does run and runs dam good, still faster than it did before. But runs rich. It runs rich enough that it has a miss. I called Ed Wright and he thinks its the 02 sensor, which I should change because when we first started it up after the swap it ran rich and foaled the plugs. What do you guys think?
Any suggestions?

I recommend trying your stock chip. If a 'custom' chip is making you run rich enough to foul plugs, then the chip is way off. I'd definitely suspect the chip before i started assuming that some other random parts failure was doing it.

Then you have something weird wrong. A stock chip should have no problem running that setup, it is far from radical, hell you're running a stock cam and everything. The O2 sensor would not be on my list of things to check though since it is ignored until you hit closed loop anyway. I'm making an assumption here that eth car runs bad all teh time, not just in closed loop. If i'm wrong, then so would be ignoring the O2.
IMO, if it has run this way since you did the LT1 intake swap then you messed something up in the swap. Are you sure the dizzy is in right and the timing is set right? And all the plug wires are on the right spots and aren't ancient and dead (don't think i'm mocking you, this happens ALL the time to even the best guys i know) A screwed up MAP sensor could also do bad things as already suggested. Other than that, off the top of my head i can't think of anything you would have touched that could do this. A seriously bad knock sensor could be false knocking and retarding your timing into oblivion, but that would usually set a code pretty quick if that happened.

What can I use to check for vaccum leaks? I have heard of people spraying stuff around the intake and TB to check for leaks, but I can't remember what they used. Anyone know?
Thanks, Ron.

What some people use is starting fluid, but you have to be VERY CAREFUL!!! with it, 'cause if sprayed in distribuitor or any other spark, it could cause a fire. I've used it with no problem.

more often than not, a vacum leak will cause a lean mixture. maybe the fuel pressure diaphram has a hole/rip in it, and all the fuel is just goin through the vacum line, causeing it to run really rich, does it do it even when you floor it, if it clears up, i would bet this is your problem. maybe a faulty temp sensor, telling the computer its cold, even when warm, and causin a rich mixture?? put it on a scan tool, and see what comes up...

Make sure the map sensor is plugged insecurely. Try another. It is usually the culprit for running rich without setting any codes.
Well, I replaced the O2 sensor today and that seemed to help a little but I can still tell it runs rich because of the smell and fluid out the exhaust. So I need to find someone that can hook a computer up to my car and get a file so I can send the chip back to Ed Wright. Anyone in the Columbus, OH area?
