SLP or ACCEL Runners?
SLP or ACCEL Runners?
I have an internally stock 91 Formula L98 with a K+N, Airfoil, SLP exhaust and ported plenum with a set of SLP 1 3/4 headers waiting to go on. My question is this: I am wondering if someone can clarify for me why I should get either the SLP or ACCEL runners-I know the pros/cons of the SLP's from frequenting the board and reading all the "searched" posts, but I don't really see much about the ACCEL runners anywhere. I can get the ACCEL's for the same price as the SLP's right now, so that's not a question.
Also, what kind of porting beyond gasket matching should I do to the stock base if I decide not to go with an aftermarket piece right now but do get the ACCEL'S?
Are the ACCEL's that large port wise that they are anywhere near comparable to any of the other aftermarket runners--is siamesed the way to go or are the large tubes good too but just for a different powerband?
I am looking to get some mid 13 second 1/4 passes here and there, stay just "bolt on", and keep it my daily driver for those who are wondering whatmy performance intentions are. Any idea opinions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for posting this.
I'd love to hear from some of the people who have the Accel runners since I'm also considering them and the SLP's.
BTW where did you find the good price on the Accel runners?

I have the Accel runners, BUT I've only seen the Accel runners and not the other brands. so I can't really tell you the difference in quality/design.
I do know that with the Accel runners, you can port them out a little more to match the gaskets, and that the stock baseplate doesn't really have much "meat" to work with. When I put the Accel runners on, I also had the Edlebrock baseplate installed at the same time. I found that the Edlebrock base (at least in my experience) had to be ported out and enlarged to match the ports of the Accel runners. If I recall correctly, the ports on the Edlebrock base were the same size as the factory baseplate. I know that doesn't reallly answer your question..
I guess all I can say is that the Accel runners are an improvement over stock because of the increase in size (I think the overall length of the runners might be just a little bit shorter, too.. don't quote me on that one). But to really maximize it, you'd of course have to port/gasket match, and with the stock baseplate, I don't think you'll be doing it any justice.
After my intake/head/cam/chip upgrade, I can honestly say that my car pulls quite strongly upwards to 5600rpm. Ok, I haven't dyno'ed the car, but let's just say that there have been times when I hit my rev-limiter (MSD 6AL) before even knowing it.. and I believe that my rev-limiter is set to 5800rpm, and my shift light at 5600rpm. The car PULLS... and even better are the looks on the faces of 4th gen drivers when they lose...

I think that since the SLP runners are siamesed, they will allow more air on the top end, and of course sacrifice a little torque on the low end...but I imagine it's hardly measurable when compared to the accels.
IMHO the SLP's are kinda ugly.

I found this list of runner dimensions in an old Hot Rod.

I think Edelbrock's Base dimensions are the same the TPIS & Accel Pieces, but not sure.
Now we just need the ones for the LT1 intakes, The Stealthram, and The SLP T-Ram.

Would a more complete (& verified) chart like this make a good sticky?? It's not favoring any brand - just informative.

I have a T-RAM sitting here in my room....it is similar in construction o the Stealth Ram as far as it's lower manifold portion...how would I go about measuring the runner length on something like that to get my technical measurements correct?
Great info '89! Thanks. I have alot of early 90's mags but don't seem to have that issue or the 7/00 GMHTP unfortunately as mentioned above....thanks for posting that. The runners I'm getting are used, hence the good price
I'm actually a little surprised to see that the aftermarket intake manifolds have the same mesurements as far as the bases go....puts alot of rumors to rest as far as I'm concerned. Edelbrock makes the TPIS as we all know but then TPIS ports them--so a ported Edel piece will match the ACCEL piece...but is there any truth to the rumor that the ACCEL base has more meat on it for porting? Does that make sense to anyone? I don't see how one could have that much more runner port material and the others wouldn't?
I'm not sure how they measure the runner length Raptor. (<---Mister "I have a T-RAM sitting here in my room....") Seems like if you measured on the top or bottom of the ports, you'd get 2 different lengths. I also was wondering after re-reading that article if all the aftermarket bases are really the same.
I honestly have never seen any aftermarket TPI manifolds or runners (except a Stealthram) in person. Only pics. I bet someone on here has had a good look at all 3 aftermarket bases and could give us the low down. Do you have everything you need to install that T-Ram? & Will it all fit under a Firebird hood?
I bet that things worth about the same thing as a Mickey Thompson CrossRam for the HP 409's. Probably about as rare too.
Maybe a sticky isn't what it should be Bort, but seems like there should be a place for such basic technical info.
Basic stuff/but hard to find. I just have a habit of collecting all my old car books. My wife hates it. The cars she's okay with - but the magazines everywhere. That gets her.
In fact, I still have an old Summit catalog with an ad for the T-Ram in it. In all my old magazines though, the old SLP articles from back then with their '89 Vette, 89 Iroc, & the '92 Firehawk Prototype-none use the T-Ram. The Iroc has regular SLP runners, and the other two used an intake that looked like a homemade sheet metal miniram type manifold. I wonder how many of those were made and if anyone outside of SLP got there hands on one??
