My L-98 freshening plan

Hi all,
Over winter break i am going to do a little work on the 350tpi in my 92 Trans Am. Its completly stock except for the flowmaster cat-back,gutted cats, K&N,wires, the basic stuff. So I'm gonna pull the intake/heads off and port everything and gasket match. So here's my questions. I am thinking of adding rockers with a bigger ratio. Does anybody know the part number for some either roller or not depending on the price(on a college students budget ). Also do you think headers would be worth the price at this point? Any cheap ideas? Also while i'm in the engine should I bypass the AIR pump? Can this even be done with just a change of belt? The car has run about a 14.5 the way it is now. If you where in my shoes what would you do, keep in mind my time is worth nothing but money is Would rockers/headers upset the stock computer? A cam swap is out of the question right now. Thanks in advance. -Mike

I bought a set of 1.6 ratio roller tip rockers made by CAT off of ebay for $66.They seem to be quality pieces although I havent put them on yet. I am waiting until I rebuild the engine and put my vortec heads on before I put them on. From my understanding they will go on with no problems.Just make sure they are self aligning. As far as deleting the air pump I wouldnt do it if you have emissions testing. I am tossing around unhooking mine but have not decided yet.

I would go with a Roller Tip Rocker, if on a Budget.

Headers are Definately worth the time and expendature, Above All Else.

Headers with the rest of the changes you list should provide a solid L98 wich will break deep into the 13's, and still drive like a new car.

If I was in your position, While I had the heads off and everything else, I would stab a Used ZZ4 Cam in the block, and forget the 1.6 Rockers.

You would benifit much more from the cam, and with the heads and intake off the motor like that, Changing the Cam will be trivial. Not to mention the price of the Rockers would more than Cover the cam, and all accessories needed to install it.

The addition of the ZZ4 cam will really wake the Motor up, And will run fine with the stock programming ( altho More could be found in the chip)

Jerry, I just bought a set of the rockers off e-bay. Should have them on when I get home in about two weeks. I'll let you know how it turns out. Bort any leads on a used zz4 cam? Would it work with the rockers i just ordered? Keep in mind that about a 50-75 shot will be run through this motor form time to time. Thanks in advance. -Mike

Try a seach on Ebay for ZZ4, or on the Classfieds here.

I wouldnt Run 1.6 Rockers with the ZZ4 Cam on stock heads without First Having the Valve guides Cut down, or using Corvette Retainers, as you risk retainer-guide interferance problems.

1.6 rockers alone arent going to make much differance, if any, over stock.

Agrees with Bort. I figured the 1.6 ratio would give a little more lift but the main reason I bought them was for reduced friction and along with that comes less heat, cleaner oil ect. I figured for $66 what the hell??

Stock my car has 1.5 ratio correct? the stock lift is .413 .428 dur= 202 207. so that is .2753 and .2853 at the cam, with 1.6's it should be bumped to .440" and .4565" respectively. I guess its not a huge jump but the ZZ4 is lift .474"/.510", dur. @ .050" = 208"/221", With the 1.6's the ZZ4 would go to .505"/.544" is that over the limit of the stock heads/retainers? Also where do you recommend i pick up a set os stock replacement springs?
