Off the shelf chips are junk. Even aftermarket 'custom' is very hit or miss, emphasis on miss. Don't waste your money on somebody elses chip. Read this instead: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=104792

Ed Wright can fix you up with a chip that actually puts more power to the ground.
Do a search on "fastchip".

Dumb question to ask on this site. Always the same replies-"off the shelf chips are junk" or the old stand by " burn your own".
Good luck.

ROFLMAO. No, you know what is dumb. Shelling out hundreds of dollars on something that doesn't help anything for the vast majority of people that try them. Ed Wright is the only half decent person to go to, and even his stuff doesn't run right for half the people or so that get a chip from him.
If you don't want to believe us, or just have a penchant for blowing money then thats fine. But there's a reason that the only person in this thread recommending something doesn't even have a chip from that person.

Here's what it comes down to. Buying the equipment to burn your own chips is cheaper than buying an off teh shelf chip. And off teh shelf chips are complete garabage anyway, as ILLUSTRATED for you in the other thread, the only chnages from stock are minor and easy to duplicate yourself, except then you can further tweak it, rather than be stuck with just one chip that won't even be close to optimal. And as for more custom type chips, Still garabage. I've never heard of a PR custom chip being worth any real gains, and in my only experience with them, an unmodified ARAP bin outperformed the 4th (!!!!) pass by PR at trying to make him a custom chip. And like i already said, even Ed Wrights stuff is very hit or miss, which is not the kind of thing i'd be willing to dump a few hundred dollars on. Especially when for half the money i could take my own crack at it.

It never goes away either. People will always believe the marketing hype over common sense. I don't even try anymore. You want an aftermarket chip, go for it.

Some 86’s had a problem with a “bugged” / bad chip. Many of the bugged chips were replaced when the people brought their new cars in for service. However, some, like my 86 (bought in 2001) still had the old bugged chip. Regardless if yours was replaced back when or not, 86 was the first year for the style computer you have. Over the years performance and driveability issues were addressed in later years chips. If you’re not after perfection and just want a little more zip, it might not be a bad idea to get the 1988 305 chip for your gearing. 1989 MAF Camaros have the anti-theft programming, so the 88 chip is the last MAF year that will crank your car. There is a listing of chips in the FAQ section of this site.

It should cost around $45 from your local dealer. If you’re stock (or close to it), slight deviations on the TPS voltage and bumping the initial timing can improve times significantly. Usually as much or more than off the shelf stuff and sometimes as much as the “custom” burned chips from someone that’s never seen the car.

My 2 cents, I got an off the shelf chip from Ed Wright a while back. My ECM and memcal went out at the same time so I figured since I needed a new chip anyway Id spend extra and get the Fastchip. I think a stock memcal is like $80 and this was $160, so yes its a bit more money. Unfortunately (for evaluating the chip performance at least) I did a tuneup at the same time, plugs, rotor, cap, timing. I saw a improvement from an average of 9.47 to 9.24 in the 1/8 mile. Definitely significant, but dificult to say how much was the chip and how much was the tuneup. I wouldnt' have bought the chip if my old one hadn't burnt out and I totally agree that burnging your own would be better. I hope to do that when I get the time and the money.

by the way this was on a basically stock 91 Forumula 350
