intake manifold leaking coolant again...
I pulled my intake manifold today because it’s leaking coolant. This is the 3rd time I have done this. Anyone have any tips for keeping the intake sealed? Also, any specific intake gasket that I should use? I have been using the TBI intake gaskets because you can buy them for cheaper because they don’t come in a set like the TPI gaskets do. Is this my problem?

Yes, put the liquid Teflon sealer on ALL the bolts. This will minimize coolant and oil from seeping up the threads.

Also, when you torque the manifold down, go to the max torque called out (Chiltons lists 25-45 ft/lbs). Use Rol, or GM gaskets for TPI on it.
I agree with morely, you may have a pitted coolant port. Look on the intake side of the coolant port at the rear (inspect the fronts too) for signs of pitting. Gaskets need a smooth flat surface to seal. I don't like using RTV on intake gaskets, but if the intake is pitted, I'll smear the RTV around the coolant port on the intake only to fill in the pits, then quickly torque the intake down as per service manual.

It was pitted a few months ago (last time I took off the intake) so I used JB weld on it. It is perfectly smooth now and still leaking. Is there any trick when putting on the intake manifold to keep it from leaking?
Definitely use some sort of sealer on the intake bolts, and make sure you're using washers. The last couple times I didn't even put rtv around the ports and I've had no problems losing any coolant. If you're worrying about how well it will seal, I'd probably use it.
The only time I used RTV to try to seal the water jacket ports, I was removing the intake less than 6 months later for the same leak. The only thing I use is a little permatex hi-tack to hold the gaskets in place while I drop the manifold in place. Torque is VERY important, go to the high side and use the reccomended sequence and do it in stages.

the TBI gaskets are different than the TPI. the TBI's have the rear coolant passeges blocked off, the TPI's are open. i bet the pressure from being blocked off is causing the gasket to blow out. either cut out the aluminum block off from the TBI gaskets or buy the TPI set

OK numb-nuts, since you obviously know more about gaskets than anybody else
, perhaps you would care to explain how a blockoff in the gasket is going to cause an overpressurization on a port that STOPS 9mm into the intake. Sounds like your really on the ball, keep up the good work.

Before you take it all apart, take a torque wrench and torque the intake bolts to see if they have backed off. I don't like using RTV on the gaskets themself, but if you have not been, this time put RTV around the coolant ports on both sides of the gasket. While the intake is off, look at the old gaskets and see if you can tell if they have been evenly compressed. You may have a warped manifold. Not many people have a true straightedge in there toolbox, but if you can get a hold of one (or have one) now would be the time to check the mating surfaces for flatness and pitting. (the pitting will be obvious without the straightedge).
And for the record, some TBI intakes have water crossovers in the rear like alot of the carbed intakes, and require the use of the block off plate, however, since the TPI intake does not have the crossover, they are not needed, however, having them will not effect operation since its redundant, but Scottydta already knew that

Every TBI gasket I've ever seen has the block-offs, and I've never seen a TPI gasket with blockoffs. I don't know that much about all the various gaskets, but it seems to me the easiest fix would be to use a TPI gasket to start with. There's got to be a reason they make different kinds and specific which to use with which type of intake. What that reason is, I don't know. But they wouldn't make two types if all motors used the same one would they?

The point is, the Small Block Chevy is all about INTERCHANGE. If either one of you ever took a TPI lower intake off a car or even seen one, you'd see that the coolant ports go NO WHERE. THEY STOP. The whole point to scotts original argument was that the plate was causing an overpressuriazation! What sense does that make. Would not the coolant port stopping cause an overpressurization????? lol... The gasket doesn't matter because hardly any coolant goes behind there anyway. You might want to try a different type of gasket, though. Maybe you can find one that is thicker. I'm wondering if your manifold is warped or something, have you checked it for straightness and cracks in the front? Did you have it milled after you jb-welded it? Maybe it would be best to just get a new manifold.
89 Iroc Z, I'm really sorry you have to sift throug all the nonsense just to try and fix your car. Some people feel inclined to throw their 2¢ in whether they really know the subject matter or not.

89 IROC Z Id listen to Bernard (4l60bliss). Hes a GM tech, and knows his ****. As for GMmuscleman.. well he doesnt know much as far as working knowledge would go. Scotty is good with a wrench, but Im not sure how in depth his knowledge is. BTW I know both of them.

If you're sure that you've been using the correct torque values on the bolts, tried thread sealer, filled any pits in the intake itself, then the next step is to check for straightness of the manifold, as has already been posted.
If it's a stock intake, if it were me, I'd simply try replacing it and see what happens. Replacement TPI intakes are pretty cheap. And besides...if that didn't work, you'd need to pull the heads and have them checked at that point....IMHO.

That's fair enough. The main reason I like SE3GO so much is that there has been an established precedent of respect and decency that you don't find very often on a lot of these type of boards. I, personally, would like to keep it that way. 4L60 has worked very hard to do just that. Personally, the man has given me a lot of respect and a lot of help. As always I welcome new members.
