what problems would arise with a non working EGR?

I pretty much understand the basics of the EGR system, But what would resullt in a non working EGR? Im sure Combustion temperatures would increase, so could this be repaired by adding a cooler spark plug range?

To make a long story short, Im using 88' vette heads which doesnt have a port for the EGR and using edelbrock intake manifold which also dosent have a secondary port for the EGR. I've been checking my Spark plugs and they've been coming out hot, so i guess this is the culprit, There isnt any vacuum line attached to the EGR, so can i leave it at that and just add a cooler spark plug range?

The only thing I can see happening, is the SES light maybe coming on...if so, have the prom burned to diasble EGR diag's and functions/codes...as far as performance is concerned, just tune the engine as is and be done with it.

Then again if you have a functional smog test, your screwed.
