MAF restriction?

I am just about ready to button up my motor and am ready to get a chip burnt for it. I was thinking about how big of a restriction the MAF is, and I also read an article recently about a modded 396 that gained a ton of HP when they changed to DFI. My question is this...
Is it worthwhile to convert to SD?
If not, what are the other affordable alternatives?
My car is an '86 IROC-Z, the motor is a 383, and it has TFS heads (going to sell my aluminum vette heads), cc306 cam, modded LT1 intake, 1.6 roller rockers, all high-flow TB and fuel components, borla exhaust, headers, and a T-56. So it should pull in quite a bit of air. Anybody have experience with this?

I did everything I could possibly do...descreen the MAF, trim half the fins (wanted some heatsink), cut the lip on the inside of the aircleaner down, all that stuff. Wish they made smooth bellows for thses things. Anyway, I was just told that the MAF imposes a huge restriction over 400 HP. So I'm wondering if I should save the money and step up to DFI?

Vette Forums are always, ugh, well, interesting.

The LS1 and 3.5 LT1 MAFs are accurate to 512 gm/sec..
It would be hard to imagine GM risking a few thousand engines on calibrations that weren't accurate. Not that anyone hammers on the 4th Gen F bodies, or C5s.
