Weird problem....

I know this may seem strange, but maybe some of you have experienced it...

Sometimes when I'm driving, and this happens more often on the highway, but I'll be at about 3/4 throttle and want to step it up a bit, so I go to full throttle, but the car doesn't accelerate faster, it accelerates the same and then starts to ping pretty badly....what would cause this?

I've heard that a clogged cat can do this kind of stuff but my cats are both gone, replaced by pipes. Any help would be most appreciated!

Oh BTW my timing is set to about 12 btdc (what is stock by the way?) and I'm pretty sure nothing has been done to the chip.

Do you have an automatic or a manual? Not that it would affect the ping, but if you had a 700r4 then the lack of acceleration could just be the tranny downshifting from OD at WOT.

You mean the tranny not downshifting? (yes i have the 700r4). No its not downshifting, nothing changes except the pinging happens - seems to me that a normal car would either downshift to pick up acceleration or the engine would just rev higher but slower, not stay about the same and start pinging???

Check the resistance of the TPS across its full range. Make sure there are no "dead" spots in the range.

You may want to check the TV cable to the trans as well.

Yeah the TPS is something I haven't messed with yet, basically because I don't know how to use electrical equipment to diagnose, etc (even though my dad's an electrician )

However, I have adjusted the TV cable a few times, now correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you push the D button and move the thing as far back as you can? thats what I did anyway.....

Set your base timing to 6d BTDC, the extra 6d of timing won't help if its pinging. What type of Gas do you run? Is the rest of the engine stock?

I typically run 91, that's the highest available here without going to a racing fuel station or something, and consider mine is basically stock compression 91 should be overkill. I think I will set it back to 6 degrees, but has anybody measured the power difference between setting it a stock or 12 or so? I don't have access to a dyno or I'd do it, but I'd love to see the facts - and I'd hate to go back to 6 and lose lots of power.
