Hey guys, I have a couple vortec heads questions
hey guys. I have decided to go the vortec head route and need some info. I am gonna start looking around for a good used set and was wondering if any casting are better than others and if so, what years/models should I look for them in? Also, when i go to order headers, what model do i order?
Will the SD manifold work with any vortec head or with only specific castings? Sorry for all the questions. Any help would be greatly apreciated.

These are the two casting #'s for Vortec heads.
GM used them in all 5700 Vortec 350 motors. Trucks, Tahoe's , etc.
I've heard it said, but haven't had it verified, that you should avoid the 906 castings that came from 3/4, 1 ton Trucks. Something to do with different exhaust seats impeding flow.
Go to www.car-part.com
plug in a 1996 Chevy Tahoe / Suburban , I've seen them as low as $120 each used.
Also, the stock valve springs are only good until about .480" lift or so... anything beyond that would need new springs.
A vortec head is a Vortec head.
Use regular SBC headers.

i have a set of the 062 off my uncles 98 k1500 350. i took one head apart and no carbon build-up on the valve's at all. i have lapped the valve's on one head and going to get some valve stem seals. i see so nasty ones selling on ebay for $312. i'm asking $300 with valve job and new seals. best of luck, tom
