Have TPI zz4... cams and intake?
Have TPI zz4... cams and intake?
Hey,
1st of, Hi.
New poster to the board, I've been lurking a while, though.
Anyway, I've got an 88 formula with a zz4, 24# injectors, FP regulator, hooker headers, and cat-back. The rest is pretty much stock, including the TPI intake and rails, which everyone says starves the zz4 at high rpms. So I'm researching where to go from here. Just a note, the mods so far have been joint efforts with some friends, and I don't have quite the knowledge (yet) on everything, so forgive me if I ask some silly questions. heh.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop in an lt4 hotcam. I figure that this would make a good time to do the intake, too. I can't seem to find straight answers here, though, in the differences btw the stealth-ram, miniram, and superram.
From what I've read, (someone correct me, if needed!) the superram has higher torque output, while the miniram does better for top end. So where does the stealthram setup come in? the stealthram seems significantly cheaper than either of the other two. What's the word on quality and performance or these? or other completley different directions?
The stock TPI intake has a... 52mm plenum and a 48mm TB, is that correct? So if I were to get a new manifold, say superram, etc, do they already have a larger plenum with the kits? I think the kits usually come with a TB, either like a 52 or 58, so how does that match up with the plenum?

Please do a search.
After that, read this.
IMHO, (which isn't worth jack $hit) I would go w/ a bigger cam than the LT4 if you are going w/ the HSR or the MR. The SR is the only one that will pass emissions, but you already knew that from doing a search and reading your exact question 600 times by now. If you want something hard to work on and expensive then get the Super Ram. Many people have great success w/ the 219/219 LPE cam and the SR. Check it out. Along w/ the search function.
ANYWAY, I'll be going w/ the HSR b/c its cheap and it performs and its easy to work on. So I bought a cam to match it. The comp cams 306.

i've been lookin into doin the same kind of project for some time now and i've basically decided on the comp cams 306 also along wit AFR 195 heads and the complete holley stealth ram setup including the 950 holley ECM IMHO this seems to be the best way to go and talkin wit otha members many seem to agree. but i'm not sure what ur plans are, i'm not lookin by any means to pass emisions (and thers no way i would no cats or AIR also) and sometime in the future after the tranny and rear etc are done i plan on using a power adder probally a blower. just rember many different options but i have found that the one i stated above seems to be one of the best at this point of time for our cars
Yes, do NOT put a stock TPI on a ZZ4. You'll choke it to death.
I love my MiniRam. It's REALLY easy to work on and delivers a table-flat torque curve. It costs around $1200 with fuel rails, and you'll need to reprogram your chip since you'll be cutting the runner length down by about four-fifths.
Then there's the usual larger runners and baseplate which are as easy to work on as your stock manifold. They'll probably support the 350hp of the ZZ4, but not any more than that. Additionally, the TPI's are very peaky in the torque curve- something I hated.
