for those with SDPC tpi base and vortec heads(you happy)

For all of yous with the vortec base and heads,, are you happy overall with its performance. Im thinking of it but not sure if its really gonna be worth it in the long run. I am only looking for about 400hp.
i was thinking
vortec heads(modified for better springs)
tpi base
edelbrock runners
52MM TB
maybe HOT cam or something better
and all the mods i already have in my sig.

plus I do not want that EGR kit on my car. I am not cutting holes in my nice jet coated SLP headers for emissions crap. the air pump is already in the trash

IROCZ1989, have I met you before? This is my new 91z28. ya the last 91 burnt and I missed it too much so I had to make another one. the last time I had a red car was my trans am in high school. As for my crate engine....well the first one lasted me 5 minutes then had no oil pressure.. had to pull it back out, crate it up and ship it back to Pace. The new one works fine but I want MORE POWER!

I havent had it at the track yet. Ive been trying to work out about 10 million bugs in the computer system. My biggest restriction right now is the heads i think. They are the heads off the chevy caprice engine. that is the crate engine I got. hey it was cheap and i knew i would be here again oneday wanting more. My car falls flat on its face at 4400 after that its like valve float. motors making noise but I aint going no where

Hey BOTTLEDZr28,
I don't mean to get of the subject but being from Massachusetts like I am how do manage to pass emissions with your set-up? Do you know someone? Or does the deletion of the smog equipment not really make all that much of a difference? I'd like to unclutter under the hood of my 91 Formula but I'am afraid it wouldn't pass the sniffer. Thanks, and sorry again for getting of the subect of the thread.

so you thinking I should go back to 3.42's? I kinda do since the car revs to high on the highway. and the LT1 cam I have was put in there because the enginehad a realy bad peanut cam in there. The lift on it was about .378. beside the LT1 cam will be trashed if i do the vortec head combo.

3.42's are the choice of gear for tpi setups since tpi doesn't really like higher rev's. agreed the lt1 cam is better than the peanut cam.

ok so getting back to my orginal post, what cam would be the best choice for the vortec heads. I know this is beat on all the time but most guys beat around the bush. Im trying to at least run with an LS1. I want the HSR but its gonna laugh at the stock heads when it goes on and new aluminum heads are out of my budget right now.
I want a car with tremedous torque for light to light racing. so what TPI runner and cam will work the best.

I had a Hot cam nut I sold it while back to Zepher I think. I sold it because of the modifications that would have to be dont to the heads on my engine. I didnt want to soend that much money on those heads if I knew they would get changed out in a year of so

I cant believe that a bunch of people running this base and vortec heads are not responding to this subject. These heads are supposed to be good and worth bragging about.
Come on guys,
Whats up?

I have your above mentioned setup........I LOVE IT!!! I had the L98 and it had TORQUE, but this motor has the torque and the HORSEPOWER!!!! It is amazing.....She pulls well into the 5000 range w/ the STOCK TPI setup...No bull$hit. I have not had it at the track so I cannot give you times. That will be done very soon.

Let me know if you have some more specific questions..

Well i do have a lot more questions. I want more power and the vortec head/intake cobo can get me closer to 400hp but I may want more down the road. I am now looking into the edelbrock heads and a nice cam now since I really like the HSR. THe HSR wont bolt to the vortec heads

Hey BOTTLEDZr28,

To answer your original question, I am running vortec heads and the SDPC TPI base and I am very pleased with them. I will be switching cams in about a week, and I am hoping to be in the 11s (N/A). All my details are in my sig. Good luck.

Later - Mike.....

What Cams are you gyus using?

I am in the process of assembling everything to a L98/Vortec/TPI buidup in my 89 GTA.

I have the heads and I am ordering the intake in the next few weeks.

I've been playing around with different combos of cams, but I am not convinced that the HOT cam is the right choice. It seems to me that this cam is not really matched a LTR runner setup and Vortec heads. I will probably go with the Crane Cam PowerMax 2032 which makes peak torque @3500 and HP@5000 rm(all this with only .452-.465 lift) Also this comba can benefit from a dual pattern cam (IMO)

Desktop Dyno rates the Hot LT4 cam at peak TQ@4000 rpm and HP@5500 rpm...a little to radical in my opinion for a stock TPI setup and stock TQ convertor....

By the way the ratings above are from Desktop Dyno 2000....I know it's not real world, but it can help to point out stuff...

Also the Hot LT4 cam bleeds of more pressure than other cams, resulting in less Dynamic compression(5 psi).

Basically all this is to ask what cams are you guys running in yuor vortec/tpi setups?

Don't have any dyno #'s or track times, but my father has a 68' Chevy step side: 98' Burban 4 bolt main 350 w/ about 11K miles, heads have had better springs installed & a 3 angle valve job, SDPC base, SLP runners, BBK 52mm TB, 1.625 diameter long tubes, 2.5 inch duals. He's running a small Comp XE cam... I want to say it's the XE 264 HR - 112 LSA & 108 int. centerline. The truck has a 700R4 with an SLP 11 inch converter, 3.73 posi w/ 27 inch tall tires. It's a MAF set up and needs some more tuning before we really go out and step on it. It seems to idle fairly decent and should have real good street manners, by no means a race truck. HTH
