slow fuel pump on cold start?
Before I start be aware I don't have a coldstart injector, nor do I have the '89 ecm.
I posted before that when I crank in the morning(or whenever the engine is cold) That it takes longer then usual to start. I know the coldstart would help but it takes 15-20 seconds to start, then it sometimes don't even stay running. I posted that when the oil guage reads 30 psi I hear a noise like a pump turning on(moaning/buzzing type noise). I said oil pump then. Now I listened today and it sounds like the fuel pump. After I hear the noise the car starts to want to start. Is it a bad relay? Pump? When I put the key to run I don't here the pump run. But when the car stalls after starting I can sometimes here the pump for a couple seconds.
What do you think?
Thanks
Matt

The car has a feature so that if the fuel pump relay fails the fule pump is turned on when the oil pressure comes up durring cranking. Try using your fan relay temporaily for the fuel pump just to test I think it is the same type. The fuel pump is supossed to run for a coupe seconds when the key is turned on and then shut off, then it runs continuosly when the engine is being turned over. If this doesnt work check the engine temp sending unit for the ECM (ther is 2 temp sending units one for the ecm and one for the gauge) I belive it is mounted at the front of the intake mainifold on a TPI car, if it is faulty it could be sending the wrong info the ECM which will cause incorrect fuel enrichment. A gasoline engine needs alot of fuel when starting cold.
I have more Ideas if these dont work.

Thanks for the reply. I have replaced the coolant temp sensor already. I know the car won't start cold cause I don't have a coldstart injector and I'm still using the stock '85 ECM. What other ideas do you have. I'm open to all suggestions. I also don't have a fan relay. I'm running a driver controlled electric fan.
Thanks again,
Matt

Does the fuel pump come on when the key is turned on? Make sure the fuel system is functiong correctly. If the fuel pump and fuel pump relay is functioning correctly, you will then need to get a custom chip made with 89' up cold start up enrichment built in, with the cold start injector programing and no cold start injector itself then it would be very hard to start the engine. What temp are trying to start it at?

I put in a known good relay and it works. The pump runs when I turn the key. It don't shut off though. I plan on getting the chip it's just been too cold in MI to get out and change the computer.
Thanks
