You could advance the base timing by probably up to 4° without ill effects. You do this by turning the distributor itself. Many people just bump it up 'til it knocks, then back it off about 2°. Though it's not the "right" way, it's not entirely the "wrong" way either and will get you a little more peppiness. You can counter some of the danger of inaudible detonation by going to a higher grade gasoline. If you're going to do this it's the best idea anyway.

You have to disconnect the EST near the passenger side strut tower. It's a connector with a tan w/ black stripe wire. Once you do, your ECM is no longer controlling the timing, then you unbolt the distributor lock down bolt, and twist it to advance or retard the timing.

It's the recommended method for setting the base timing. Your ECM functions using the base timing, and it needs to be set properly. 6 degrees BTDC is the default I think, and you can advance it to 10, but check for knocks. I have mine at 8.

Any tips to getting that bolt loosened? I worked for a couple hours on it today, had a hell of a time and didn't budge it at all. My base timing is currently 4 degrees so I wanna bump it up.
