cam good for TPI?

I have a 350 block from a 73 vette I'm rebuilding...

.040" over, crank turned...

Would a 214/224 @.050" cam be good?? Running around .500" total lift? I know a TPI engines run best when shifted from 5400-5600 RPM...and max horses at 4750-4850 RPM. But does this cam maximize on this? Or limit me?

An article about making a TPI run 12s used a 212/226 @.050" cam. It also said they had 0.515/0.555 inch intake and exhaust lift with 1.6:1 rockers arms. It worked for them...enough to get a 12.3 quarter anyway. (it was combined with a lot of other upgrades including and not limited to suspension...but that part is later, it takes doing one step at a time )

I was also wondering if I could achieve the same lift numbers that they did....should I tell the machine shop to go .040" over or a different amount?

Thanks to everyone for the help!

I think I know the article you are referring to. You didn't tell us what kind of vehicle you are putting this into, its weight, rearend gear ratio, transmission, or intended use for the engine. Its kind of hard for anyone to recommend a cam for you based on what you have given us. As far as the .040" goes, well, a few hundredths of an inch overbore either way I don't think would be of significant difference. Just not enough displacement to matter (at least on a 350 or 305), and probably not even on a larger engine. Generally speaking, you only want to overbore the cylinders enough to clean up ridge wear (though some do go for more). Want you might want to tell the machine shop, is the specs of the cam you want to run, so they can make sure there is sufficient piston-valve clearance. I know people who have had issues with their cams in that department .

Oops, I stand corrected. For the missing info:

-92 Camaro
-about 3500 lbs (stock with manual, right?)
-3.32 rear gear.....will be 3.72 when I get to it
-T5 WC
-street/road racing (must put imports in their place ...including SUPRAS!!!)

About the 40 over, it really is just to clean it up as it was rusted out pretty bad. I'm going to find out Tuesday what condition the block is in. But for this application, would boring it out more do any good?

The above mentioned cam sounds like the ZZ9 roller cam from TPIS w/1.6 rockers. Reguardless they must have had some really good heads and quite a bit more than the stock TPI.

However the 214 - 224 sounds like a reasonable cam for a TPI 350 , but it will need help from other aftermarket bolt ons to achieve good numbers.

It sounds like you are talking modified TPI. Stock ones are done by 4500 rpm and from what I hear they are best off shifted then.

Good Luck!

yeah, it is supposed to be modified. Ported and polished L98 aluminum corvette heads, Big mouth TPI intake manifold, large tube runners, ported plenum, and 52mm throttle body topped off with 24# injectors.

YOu can get the ZZ9 through TPIS directly. Check out www.TPIS.com Its not cheap though, about $375 for just the cam. I have that cam and I am pleased with it so far. I do sense that bug in the back of my head telling me to go bigger, go bigger, GO BIGGER...

About the ZZ9 cam. Suppose I just won the bid on this ebay auction, only to realize that I bought an old style zz9 cam. It's connection at the timing gear is slightly different. I got a great deal, but how much work do I have to do to make it work? I'd appreciate your help.
