Help with AFR heads
Help with AFR heads
I'm trying to order a set of AFR 190's but cannot figure out what cc I need. I am running a superram with a lt4 hotcam and 1.6 rr on a stock shortblock. I'm leaning toward 58cc which I think would put my compression a little over 10.1 witch is okay. My question is will there be enough p/v clearance?? I call AFR tech and they told me they couldn't say, that I'd just have to see. I don't want to spend 1500 bucks on heads then have to mod the shortblock. I want compression between 10.1- 11.1 Please help

What head gaskets are you going to run? .039, .041 or .051 ? You should have plenty of clearance with that cam. You should check the clearance you have now. I still say you will be fine. Don't go to much bigger with the cam unless you know your Piston to valve clearance.

mods will be.. I have the AFR190s w/58cc
chambers and HOT cam, my PV clearance peaked at 0.88 Ink / 0.95 Exh
which is just below the minimum recommended.. (A friend has a similar setup
and measured just slightly better numbers
but in the same ballpark)
I have 10.5:1 ratio which makes a very
efficient motor, but I'm now stuck with the
HOT cam as the max lift/duration possible
without notching the pistons.
So if you see a bigger cam in your future
(and I'm not saying the HOT cam isn't big
or effective... 8-) you may need to look into some
larger chambers now and sacrifice some
current HP for future gains..

You'll be perfectly fine with that setup.
I have a solid roller cam that ramps much quicker than any hydraulic cam with a total lift of .610
This is with AFR 190's at 56cc! Can you say compression?
Its about 11.8, I have no problems at all. Other than keeping the car going straight when I take out even slightly spirited. I just posted a video of it in this section, taking out with 10" pure slicks.

He knows I'm gonna buy him a Jr Dragster when he gets to be old enough. He sees the picture and says, "Mine, dadda buy"
Pretty funny to hear a 20 month old say.
Probably tune his first TPI system by age 5.

In ordering, I went with the following options:
L98 angle plugs
58cc chambers, angle-milled
coolant temp holes drilled and tapped
centerbolt valvecovers (NOT recommended)
heli-coiled exhaust bolts
no valvetrain hardware (went w/ CC 987 springs, Manley race-flo valves)
street/strip porting package
7/16" studs, guideplates
standard intake bolt pattern (not the '87-up angles)
I had a local shop dyno my springs and do the valvetrain assembly including 3-angle valve job. Didn't use AFR hardware because their valves are heavier than Manleys, and their spring rate data has changed at least twice on their website...the latest revision puts the rate just a hair lower than I wanted for the 1.4xx" springs and I didn't want to go bigger diameter.
I don't recommend the centerbolt valve covers because they're a pain to get sealed. AFR doesn't machine the sealing surface to the same spec as GM, and both sets of GM valve covers I have interfere preventing a good seal. If I had it to do over again I'd go perimeter-bolt valve covers.
