Can Anyone Help me on this one?
Can Anyone Help me on this one?
I've got a 1991 Camaro Z28 with a 305 TPI. The guy I bought it from had already had it built up. Its been bored 30 over, has a crane cam, MSD ignition, Ported intake, 2500 Stall converter, 3" flomaster exhaust. All this has been done on the motor but he told me the computer is still stock and needs a chip burned for it. Because it dosent run like it should and it shifts to soon. My question is were is the computer located at and where can I send it to have the custom burn done? Thanks for all your help

Welcome to the boards.
Your computer is located underneath the Passenger side dash. Drop the panel underneath it, and look up, because the bracket can be kind of hard to spot, but it's a big plastic piece. Slide it a little bit to the front of the car, and it should just fall right down... and you have your computer. If I were you, I would look into maybe getting your own chip burning software, if you feel so inclined... You can get set up for about the same price it would cost you to have a custom chip made. The computer on the '91 does not control the shift points on the car, it only controls the lockup converter in the transmission. You can have your shift points adjusted to your own specs at a local transmission shop. What's the engine doing that it shouldn't be? Don't forget to try a search too to look up stuff you may need to find. Good luck.

It's kinda hard to explain but it just doesnt feel like it has the power like it should. I would think that with all the things thats been down on the motor that the computer should be updated? can anyone point me to the right direction to burning my own chip? thanks for your help quick_Trans_Am.

Have you checked your timing out? If the timing's off, it can cause problems. Ok for the PROM section try this:
https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/promintro.shtml
that's a very detailed article, which was shown to me, I'm just getting into the whole PROM thing myself... also if you need info ask the guys in the DIY PROM section, if you can't find what you're looking for, just post a message and see what happens.

One of the things I forgot to ask. Sometimes when I go to start the car its like its fluded. Kinda like a carberated car would do. I thought maybe its loading up from the cam. Takes me acouple of cranks to start then alot of blue gas smell smoke. I was told by someone maybe it needs a fuel regulator any ideas?

A fuel pressure regulator could be your problem... is the vac line hooked up to it? If you have access to one, get a fuel pressure gauge that will fit a Schraeder (I'm not sure how that's spelled, pronounced shray-der) valve. Disconnect the vacuum line going to the regulator, (should be the rearmost vac line on the psgr side of the plenum). Attach the fuel gauge to the schraeder valve on the fuel rail (may have a cap on it, near the fuel pressure regulator, looks like a bike tire valve) and watch the pressure at idle... you can watch it through the rpm band just work the throttle body by hand. Watch the pressure, you should have around 40 or so PSI at idle, and around 45 when going through the RPM's. You can check the fuel pressure with the vac line attached, but it will read a little bit lower. If it doesn't read around those figures, a pressure regulator could be the problem.

first off, I would take a look at that regulator, see what kind of condition it's in. after that, check your fuel pump relay, it may be getting weak.
Have you checked your timing yet?
