hi! i'm getting ready to do the top end of my motor and i have 3 cams to chose from....
1. zz-4 cam

2. mystery cam, out of 88-91 vette w/ tpi
what are the specs on this one?

3. custom roller 270 i-306e 222-234 @ 50 499-502 lift
on 112 lsa
this is very close to the slp 51010 cam

i'm an 88 iroc maf car. zz-4 heads, slp runners, edel. intake, ported plen. slp headers. afpr. airfoil. k&n. flowmaster. shift kit. free mods...bla...bla...bla...
700r4- 327 rear screw- stock conv for now.
stock chip but can get one burned. after the swap.

also have 1.6 rr's alum ds. eibachs's koni's sfc's lca's w/brackets
panhard rod. bushings. mostly any thing i could throw money at. thanks in advance and yes i did a search.-mike

the last cam would probably be the best for power but with un-ported heads and 3.27 gears i don't beleive it would be the best for your setup. The vette cam isn't going to big enough to get good power out of, and the zz4 woudl probably need your heads machined to work with that much lift especially with 1.6 rr's. IMHO the zz4 is probably your best cam of the three but optimally you'd use the last cam with some new or ported heads and and 3.7x gears. The zz4 isn't going to need a new chip although it may help. The last cam would definetly need some tuning to run right.

thanks. i've ruled out the custom grind as it really is for a carbed motor. i would still like to know the specs on the vette cam, it belongs to a friend of mine and he would appreciate knowing what he has. anybody? i am really afraid that if i use the zz-4 i will be disapointed. my other option are:

"the hot cam"

the slp 51002

the slp 51010, i'm told this cam rocks.

the tpis zz-9 better than zz-4 but not wild.

the tpis zz-409 a little bit to much for my motor perhaps.

also, am i underestimating the zz-4? i want something strong and i don't mind a lopey idle, in fact i want people to know i've got a cam.

Hot cam

The real thing is if you how much money do you have? a hot cam is cheap at 175 for a roller cam, and will give you much better performance and won't need valve guide clearance with stock rockers, but with stock heads its really hard to say if its too big or not. The hot cam will probably run considerably better with a new burned chip. I'd strongly suggest getting Dyno2000-its a life saver. After running the cams with a similar setup but with lightly ported heads, its spitting out 285hp/425 and about the same for my stock L98 cam comared to 332hp/437 with a hot cam. I'd do a search and check out what the max lift is on stock heads before installing any cam.

allright, my heads are a used set of off a vette. there're off now as i just had them cut. i was going to port them a bit. if i need to do machine work, now is the time. max lift is suposedly .500" but other guys on here have gone over that with no problems. i will do a search. i will look on ebay for dyno 2000. i still need guide plates and pushrods. i don't think i need to open the holes for the pushrods. any suggestions for a head gasket? during my searches here i saw alot of praise for the compcams 218/224. i couldn't find it in the summit catalog. - mike

still looking for the specs on that vette cam.

anyone?

Here's the Summit part number for that CompCam. It's a really nice cam and I think it would work well with your combo. Sorry I can't help much with the vette cam.

CCA-08-502-8
$239.95

Mike- the Advance Auto on Salem St. in Dover sells Desktop Dyno 2000.

I'm running the HOT cam and happy w/ it. Was happy when I ran TPI, even happier now with the Stealth Ram.

I can email you my DD2000 .cam and engine files, give a shout when ready.

Should be on the dyno Fri morning for my first runs w/ the AFR heads and Stealth Ram, we'll see what it does relative to the DD2000 calculations.
