Hey I have an 88' Iroc-Z with a 350 TPI I just decided to do a tune up so I got a MSD Cap, Rotor, Coil, and a Holly AFPR. I installed every thing put the PSI up to 46PSI went for a test run got on it a couple of times and than the third time I did I started in 1st gear went to 2nd gear hit about 4700 rpm and it backfired really bad so I slowed down and the car died? So I checked over all the connections thay were all together so I put the original fuel pressure regulator back in still nothing? it starts but it runs real ruff and than backfires and dies after a few seconds of running. when running the tach is going nuts all over the place? I am totaly lost and would like some input thanks a lot, if you need anymore info let me know.

Sounds like ignition. Make sure you got the plug wires in the right position. If that looks good, make sure everything is making a good connnection. Did you use dielectric grease on the connections? If not, you may what to try it.

 

Last weekdn Iinstalled a starter heat shield and rerouted my wires. With the car back together i got a backfire out of the intake and it wouldn't start. Using ignition diagnostics i found I had a bad coil. Like stated before check the ignition, particullary the coil. -John
