89 305TPI stalling
After about 7 months my car is back on the road (The 89 Formula 305TPI). But the darn thing is keep stalling out, like its kinda hard to start and I have to give it gas to help it start when I'm turning the key, and if I punch it alot it will just wanna stall after I let off. I keep having to baby it, and I'm stalling out all over the place. I can here the fuel pump injecting fuel before each start too. I went and put new gas in today was 93oct, and also some STP gas treatment and also STP fuel injector cleaner. But so far no big change still stalling. I talked to my friend who is a certified auto tech and he said just drive on it some more and let that cleaner starts to kick in. If it doesn't change anything, it may just be the fuel filter and/or fuel pump. He said when a car sits for a while all the nasty crud settles and gets all in the filter. What do you guy's suggest this if? Also whats the price of a fuel pump and fuel filter for a 89 Formula 305TPI. Thanks

i had somewhat similar problems after i had gotten back from college and first started to drive the car. My dad hadnt' started the car for about 2 months in the winter so when i got home it was the first thing i did. It idled real rough for a while but it wouldn't go away. I swapped in a new fuel filter and that solved the problem so I'd suggest trying the same thing. A new filter costs no more than 5 bucks from a local auto parts store. I'm not sure on the cost of the a fuel pump but i do know that it is a huge PITA to put one in. You'll have to drop the tank in order to replace it. Also my brain isn't really functioning but I forget if 89 was a MAF year. If so make sure your MAF is still plugged in. If it isn't then that could also be causing your car to stall.

Well I relized last night that I had put the elect. fan relay where the fuel pump relay is suppose to go. SO I put the old one back in, it started up real good and everything looked good. So I took the car for aspin and about 8 minutes into driving it started to act up again. There was rough shifting and the car kept stalling out. I'm like what the ****, I managed to get the car home and the thing is maxing out on the temp gauge I can here the one elect fan if I leave the key in the car. I'm soo pissed at this car, and cant belive its having this much trouble.
I know the rear end is going and I've known that for a while. But I dont think that could cause teh car to act up like this. I'm thinking maybe I'll go get it diagnosed up at autozone and see why the serv. engine light is keep coming up, that was one pratically the whole time even before it started to stall and have problems. HELP ME GUYS

i think the relays should be the same anyways, i'm not sure though. check the tech articles to see how to pull your own codes and start from there

Well I put the old relay back in and the car started up fine. But after about a 8 minute drive car stalled out at a light. I mangaged to restart it and get it home not before stalling out 2-3 more times. The temperature is getting very high again too, and I just put a new radiator in.
So I called up advance autoparts and got a price check on a fuel pump ~50-60+screen 6bucks. The whole sending unit is ~$240 but that coems with those two accesories. And than I checks how much a 180degree thermostat was and he said $5.99 so that fine alone with the gasket $1.99. I told him my problem and he thinks its just the thermostate. He said whats happening is the block is getting so hot that the fuel is getting burned up before it can get to the pistons or whatever. Thats why its keep stalling out. It all made sense kinda, so I just bout the thermo and gasket and gasket glue alone wiht a 6buck fuel filter. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that its jsut the thermostat or just a clogged fuel filter.
So my possibilities are:
1.Thermostate faulty
2. Fuel Filter
3. Fuel Pump
4. Fuel pump and sending unit
5.Water Pump
6. Something else
What you guys think I need your input?

Went driving the car a lil more today, feels like it needs a new tranny mount cause the car will thoump right under the centersole if I punch the car too hard from stop. The same thing happen to my other firebird and was just eh trannymount. SO I went and bought that today was only $7. I'll put that in tommarrow. BUt the car still will stall once in a while at a stop light, did once today and than twice in front of my house when I was trying to figure out what was going on. Its a very very slow stall just will idle real low like under 500rpms than stall. It restarts right up like nothing ever happen. I think that this is probly just the fuel filter cause this. The car was sitting for 7 months like I said before. SO I'll swap that out when I switch the tranny mount tommarrow. The underdrive pulleys could also be causeing or just adding to the stalls.
If I had to get rid of one of the pulleys which ones would you guys justtest I get rid of the alternator one or water pump?
