Recomendations on a 87-89 TPI car.
Heya,
I'd say in about the next six months or so (next spring most likely) I'm going to start hunting around for an IROC with either the TPI 305 or the 350 respectivly. Yet, what I am wondering is, what are some things that I should look out for when buying one of these cars. Mostly because I've heard that a lot of guys who have had them have driven them to near death, and/or done some dumbass modifications to them. I'm more wondering what some of you guys have come across when purchasing an used IROC. At the moment I have a 89 RS with a dinky 2.8 in it, but I'm more interested in buying another Camaro and keeping the RS as a cruiser car. Also, I'd rather buy a car with a V8 already in it over doing a swap. I've looking into TBI, but after reading stock specs for the 305's of those years on some of the RS's and Z28's with them, I've been turned off. TPI seems to be the way to go in my book for a stock set up. Thanks

If you want off the factory floor performance, then look for 87 305 tpi 5spds or 350's with the G92 package as both are the quikest. Also, after 88, IROCS didnt always get the top notch stuff, so look out. Look around as there are many third gens out there. 87-89 all had MAF but 89 didnt have the cold start injector as other tpi models did. 90 IROC's had speed density set up which improved power up 5hp... take that with a grain of salt. 89 and up had better rear disk brakes(PBR/Baer). Anyway, good luck and look around here as we always like to help eachother out. I would try to change the title and make sure mods dont shut this down before reading. Good luck on the search and report back with your findings!!

personally i think 89 is the best year for 305TPI 5spds. these had the largest cam outta all 305s, 89 got the better aluminum PBR rear calipers, cold start injector was gone as well and a few other goodies over 88. 90 is another good year but only for the 5.7Ls and G92 305TPI 5spds. both are great, i prefer the 305 5spd combo.

Thanks for the information guys. I'll report back eventually, but it will probably be awhile. TPI, here I come (eventually). I think that I will stick to hunting for either an 88 or an 89.

Yo man. I have a 87 iroc with L98 T5 combo. Its for sale to Fbody guys. ( I havent put F\S signs on it yet, thought Id give our community a crack at it first)
It runs good. Motor had 83k on it. Runs like a bat outta hell. Anyway man. With a little bit of $ she would look and stomp all over Lt1's.
PM me if you interested.
