my TPI install is done. It feels strange?

driving around with this thing feels weird.

i never drove an L98 car before, so i have no idea if its "acting" the way it should be.

so let me ask, can an L98 car, with 2.73s, stock 700R4, stock motor, spin its tires from a 5 MPH roll? this one can, but the wheel hop is very bad.

does the L98 tpi motor stock, have power from idle-2000 rpms? this one doesnt. this may be due to the large cam, but im hoping its just a tuning issue. when i stomp it from a dead stop, it doesnt really get up and go until it gets off the converter around 2000 rpms...

I have an XE262 cam, 2.73's, stock stall. does this sound right? or am i missing buckets of torque from tuning issues?

it also seems to pull very well between 3500-4500 then dies out, i know from reading experience this is somwhat normal, but since my cam is fairly large should i be shifting @ 4500 or riding it out to 6000 like before with the carb?

From Experience:

I had a long tube runner car with a bit larger cam (224/224) and it behaved pretty much the same way you are describing. Your cam is not designed to promote the low end torque that the TPI cams are, instead it promotes high end HP. The only problem with that is your runners kill your power at around 4000. My advice is get a smaller cam with a bigger lsa (slp's 206/212 is great for torque) or get a different manifold that poses less high end restriction.

99% of it is the 2.73 rear. I have the same rear in my 86 lb9 with a 2000 stall converter and it is still sluggish until about 21-2200 rpm. The cam is a crane compucam 2030, which is relativley small, yet bigger than stock. Leave the cam in and just get a lower rear, like a 3.42, at least thats what im doing.

Yes and yes, the 3.73's will be in less than a week. the holley stealth ram is sitting here, awaiting the under-manifold fogger installation.

i also have a 9.5" lockup 2800 stall sitting awaiting the tranny to be rebuilt, i dont want it on the stock one in case the tranny lets go (110,000 Mi) and takes out the converter.

as for the 3.73 install the kit should be here tommarow i will be having somone do it for me, one of the few things so far i havnt been able to do myself.

so after the HSR, Nitrous, gears, and Stall... i should be ok with my cam

my main concern was this a tuning issue or was this just the way a TPI with a big cam would act. I wouldnt have even bothered tuning it up with the TPI but since i never owned one i really wanted to try it out.

thanks agian.

Yeah, your cam should be much better suited to your combo with the 3.73s and the HSR. You will def. notice more RPM range too...
