Vortec headed 406 w/ TPI

i currently have a 82 Camaro with a carbed 406... i have a chance to buy a 89 Iroc 5.7/ auto ... i want to swap the 406 short block into the 89 and put some Vortec heads on the 406...what mods to the TPI do i need to keep it from running lean. the 406 has a rebuilt short block with a Crane Energizer 272/ 454 cam non roller...i am fairly certain i will have to use a LT4 knock sensor to keep the ECM from retarding the timing to much due to valve train noise...but will the stock intake/runners/plenum/throttle/ and injectors be enough to supply the 406 with air/fuel or should i invest in a aftermarket TPI and Accel EFI? and what mods are needed on the Vortec heads to use the TPI base? i plan on running 1 5/8 or 1 3/4 headers , and a Mufflex 4" exhaust so the exhaust side is covered ...just need info on the induction

Stock TPI on a 406 will result in a very torquey, RPM challenged engine. If you want a higher RPM capable engine, look into a Accel Super Ram, Holley Stealth Ram or TPIS Mini Ram. All these will work with a reprogammed factory computer or aftermarket DFI.

will the hydrolic non roller cam give me any problems if i use a LT4 knock sensor? and if i got with larger runners, better base , larger injectors , and raised fuel pressure can i make the 365-370hp like i am now? i am not looking to rev the engine any more than 5200-5500 rpm...and still need to know what mods i have to do to the Vortec heads to use a TPI base or does someone make a TPI intake for Vortec heads?

you will make considerably more power than you make now IMO. www.sdpc2000.com sells a TPI intake base for the Vortec heads.

You can still use stock runners and plenum if you want or look into large tube runners and ported plenums. That will make power passed 5500 rpm regardless of what unexperienced people will say. The vortec heads bring the TPI to life. If under them lies a stout 406 then you will be making well over 400 HP...

I am making @320 hp with a stock L98 shortblock, stock cam, stock runners and plenum. Just the vortec heads and full exhaust.

the 406 that is under is the heads is makeing approx 365hp now with 93 Center bolt truck heads (TBI heads from a 350SS truck) and a 272/454 cam with a worked over Q-Jet sitting on top .. i like the way the car runs now but i (like most everyone) want more power and i personally love EFI especially TPI .. if i can make as much peak hp with a flater curve i will be 100% satified thanks for the advice i saw that inatek ...300hp on a otherwise stock L98 ...impressive....but $400!!

Really? Damn, that's a stout number. Are you running the SDPC Vortec base? What ratio rocker arms?

I wouldn't run TPI on anything larger than a 327. I mean it really wasn't intended for a 350. Mini-ram, HSR, Superram or FIRST TPI is all I'd run on those big motors. with vortecs and the right cam, 500 HP isn't hard to get. I mean, I'm getting about that with a 363 cid motor and vortecs (fastburn 58cc)

Stock rocker arms for now....I do plan on going to aftermarket runners and a ported plenum along with 1.6 roller rockers. I figure to be around the 350 hp mark with that maybe more.
