383 Stealth Ram Track Times

12.031 @ 112.94 today with the new 383 shortblock. Previous best with the stock 350 shortblock was 12.963 @ 108.06. Both combos used the the same heads, cam & headers/exhaust. 3300lb car, full exhaust & drag radials. Shows what a little stroker torque will do for ya. More details can be found here: http://www.fbody.com/timeslips/member.cgi?id=343

Is the new shortblock the only thing different between the two runs? That is a tremendous difference. What is your CR now?
Awesome times.

The CR on the 350 was 9.9, the 383 is 10.5, that & a MSD crank trigger setup are the only additions. Of course the ECU was retuned for the 383.

very impressive times. what kind of pistons did you use and how well do you like the ZZ9 cam? I am building a HSR motor and I just picked up the AFR 195 heads but I am still looking for a good cam to run. I also need to get the engine rebuilt and I am having a hard time deciding weather or not I should build a forged 355 or a budget 383 setup

Not sure who you are asking but, I am running a Comp XR276HR cam with the HSR. I would think a forged 355 would cost about the same as a forged 383. The Scat 4340 cranks are all the same price 3.48" stroke to 3.875" stroke. I have Keith Black KB122 flat top hypereutectic pistons.

Actually a little slow. They started something new, you have to add .500 sec to the R/T. so it's actually .748 R/T

Damn, almost there Rick. Almost time for a roll bar, if you don't have one that is. How many runs, just that one? Congrats on the new success.

I only got 2 runs in yesterday. They started late cause the track was wet from Friday nights rain. My first run was at 12:30 the second at 2:00. I had to be home by 3:30, so no third run. The first run sucked, no traction. It spun the whole 60', then hooked for a 13.538 @ 110.88. The roll bar is this winter's project.

Wow, a 13.5 to a 12 flat. What did you do differently or was it the track conditions mostly?

On the first run, I could not get it to do the burnout long enough to fully heat the DR's. It grabbed after few seconds & leaped forward to the starting line. The second run I smoked 'em for a good 5 seconds, then it hooked. The mph is close on both runs, so it was the driving that made the difference.

Rick, I was asking you. I mistankingly looked back though the post and thought I was reading your sig. Thats why I thought you had the ZZ9 cam. Do you sugest the cam you have for my combo as well. Like I said, I havent decided which way I wanna go with my engine. It is going to the machine shop shortly to have it taken apart. I thunk it has a broken piston ring. Hile its apart I would like to have it punched out a bit and maybe even have it set up for a stroker setup. Im just worried that the cost will not be worth it to have a 383 made out of it. Whats better, forged pistons and a cast crank or forged crank and hypertectic pistons. I do plan to spray this engine with at least a 150hp shot of the laughing gas.

I was told by the shop that did mine, hyper pistons will take a 150 shot but not much more reliably. He also was not in favor of cast cranks for more than 450 hp. I see guys out there all the time spraying stock setups & getting away with it. I think they are livin' on borrowed time. Any kind of serious nitrous motor should be all forged, IMHO.

I needed an adjustable length distributor & read in the Holley 950 manual that mag trigger distributors cause noise problems that interfere with ECU. So I went with crank trigger & a dummy crab type distributor. Timing is supposed to be more accurate. I noticed the car starts up much better. I guess anything new is an improvement over a 15 year old stock distributor.

Holley C950 ECU, Scat 4340 crank, Eagle I-beam rods, KB hyper flatops. The C950 ECU has a direct feed for the crank trigger, hence no ignition module. The ECU & the MSD 6 completely control the spark.

Nice times man! I'm still trying to decide on whether or not to build a nice 383 HSR or go the LS1 route.....
