Building another L98 for the 'bird. Trying to build a torque monster that'll be a blast to drive (everyday) and run low 13's on the motor. How's this sound?

Heads will most likely be mildly ported 083's. Smooth out the casting marks on the intake runners, smooth out the bowl area and a little deshrouding of the chambers

Cam: still up in the air on this one. Leaning toward the LPE 211/219. Suggestions?

Intake: Stock TPI for now, ported base, plenum and knife-edged runners.

I don't think you will run low 13s with that combo.

Change heads and go with at least a CC XR269HR-12 cam and you will have plenty of torque!

Why even post that? Thanx for the help

What are the specs on the 269 cam you mentioned? I'm guessing you suggest it b/c you've dealt with it. How did it run, idle, etc..?

The LPE 211 is a great choice. The 219 might be a bit much.
The 083s correctly ported should enable you to get into the 12s...traction, proper tune, and good shifting transmission permitting.

If push comes to shove, just swap the heads for a good aftermarket set.

Because you asked. Why don't I think you will net low 13's? Because in my opinion you need to heavily port the heads and or go with a bigger cam to get low 13s, i think you're at mid 13's with that setup. You also didn't say if you have headers, exhaust, traction mods, prom burn, so i assume you don't. You asked a question, and i gave you my opinion, thats all.

Why not use the aluminum L98 heads that are on the car now? Or is this for the 2nd gen?

Here's a combo that got my 87 to go 13.1 @ 101 at the 01 Power Tour at Maple Grove. World Torquer SR heads, Lunati 218/224, .489/.502 lift roller cam Accel Super Ram, 700R4, 3.73 gears, 85 Vette converter. I am sure you could duplicate the World heads performance with a good port job.

The aluminum heads were sold. Compression was too high on them so I got rid of 'em. Thanx for the info guys.

You'll improve the airflow of the heads the most by blending the short turn (side) radius, which necessitates removal of the valves.

i dont think you'll have to worry about making most possible torque, a TPI will do that on its own useable horsepower would be my quest with a LTR set-up. best of luck and enjoy the ride.

Might want to think about some vortec heads, car craft did a 406 build using them and made 525 ft lbs with a real small lift cam to.
single pattern 230/230 480/480.
For the price they are great torque makers , especially with LTR setup

Ohhh yeah I would go with Vortecs. In fact I am (getting a gmpp 350 ho eventually)... They love stock TPI, because both are torque focused. You would need to pick up a scoggin dickey lower intake plenum, and purchase the heads. Should be around a thousand bucks alltogether. Sell off the 083 heads, port em to get more $.
