Want to leave out AIR stuff - any problems?

Ive got it all off for my header install. I just got the car inspected before I took it off. I would really like to leave of the AIR tubes and stuff, at least for a year til I need to get it inspected again. It looks better, makes the car a heck of a lot easier to work on, less weight, etc. What about the smog pump? Can I just leave it there and leave the hole open? What problems could I expect and how to avoid them?

i'm in the same process my smog pump is just blowing i don't think it'd do anything other at most heat the engine up cause it is hot air coming out other then that it is just air nothing flammable i'm sure of it cause it is an air compresser in essence. so yeah it is fine

The ECM doesn't care if the AIR stuff is there or not.

The only potential problem, is the AIR line to the cat. Without that supply of fresh air, it is possible to clog your cat up. Sometimes people get away with doing it anyway though.

Yep what Ed said. Most people ditch them once they get rid or gut out the CAT(s). There's really no point of having them then. It might cause a faulty EGR sensor to go off eventually from clogging. Then the SES light comes on. That's what happen'd to mine, but it has no other effect.

OK, Cats may clogs without air. Don't want that. I was planning on keeping the cats since Iknow I need that to pass emissions. Somebody said the pump could seize up. I didn't understand that, I thought it was just an air pump. I guess Im going to try it without and keep an eye on stuff.

Wait, are you talking about one of the 91s in your sig? Or really any serpentine car? The AIR junk is not really that intrusive at all IMO, compared to the earlier stuff anyway. The pump is in the way of nothing you touch for regular maintenance. The diverter valve comes off easily, i take it off whenever it remotely gets in the way to save hassle.

Other than that, if you still have exhaust manifolds, then by all means remove the AIR lines from them if you want to. Manifolds with no AIR tubes make plug changes pure gravy. As long as you leave the AIR line to the cat off the diverter valve you'll never clog the cats. IMO, this is a great set-up. I ran like this for a year, and honestly almost regret going to headers just because for my stock power they really don't make a difference in power to justify the work changing plugs, as well as the bolt hole i stripped during the swap. Live and learn though...

Yes, Im doing this on the 91 Formula 350. Right now I have all AIR tubes and stuff off, along with the exaust manifolds.

when you say "diverter valve", this it the piece with the plastic cover that has a couple electrical connectors, that connects to the black metal tube leading fromt the smog pump, then goes out to all the different AIR lines and tubes right?

Yes, the smog pump is completely out of the way. I read on here somewhere where a guy said this could sieze up thought if not connceted. I dont understand that, but I did see a "smog pump delete" pulley for sale somewhere, wierd.

As for the air line to the cats, right not there is a fitting sitting ther open on the driver side, that leads to the cats. What I want to do is leave the smog pump like it is, then delete the metal tube that attaches to it, the plastic switch/valve deal that attaches to it, and then all the air tubes that attach to that and lead to the exaust manifold. I would just leave the line to the cats there, open, I guess, so I could hook it up again later if needed.

One thing, though, I am installing SLP headers and i bought them with AIR. So I would have to cap off the header AIR line, no big deal. It would be less intrusive than the stock manifolds with AIR lines, but the AIR lines on the headers are welded, so it would be more intrusive than stock manifolds and no AIR, whew.
