ZZ4 and HOT cam users...help
ZZ4 and HOT cam users...help
I bought a vortec TPI base and am going to get a set of upgraded vortec castings to sit on my 1992 L-98. While the top end is off the car I want to put in a new cam. I was thinking either the ZZ4 or HOT cam. I have never driven a TPI car with a larger than stock cam and want to know the drivability issues and other experiences involved. What will my car idle at? Assuming Larger runners/TB and everything ported is teh HOT cam too big? I will be driving the car daily and racing it most weekends, I want to hit 12.9 with all the normal bolt-ons but dont want a car that won't idle and be mismatched in general.
By the way, the car has a T-56 and I will be burning a custom Prom.
So everyone with a L-98 and a big cam, what are your experiences?
These are the heads I am going to use pro topline , Does anybody have a link to better/cheaper heads?

hey bro this is easy, the zz4 cam is crap that is why tpis came out with their own version that will leave the gm cam in the dust now the hot cam on the other hand is a nice piece of work but you have to use the 1.6 rockers to benefit..you should not have any problem running in the 12s,traction willing.......

And what cam would that be? IMO the TPIS cams are way to expensive, you could get a custom ground one with the same specs from comp for much less. The beauty of the ZZ4 is it works very well with the stock prom. A LT4hc will require some prom tuning to run correctly. The ZZ4 would also benefit from a proper tune but is much less necessary. But yes the LT4hc will make more power if the rest of the parts are matched correctly.
Since you are doing prom tuning I would go with at least the LT4hc.

i am hearing of people getting less than desired results in the hotcam..... this is when useing a LTR setup ...... it just runs out of air tooo soon ...... you would need substancial porting to the base ...... to make it breath where it should. Stealth Ram would be a nice intake for that cam ...... I am going to run the ZZ4 cam this year .......
I know a guy who is running the hotcam ..... but with stock heads big base and runners headers ( he is now switching to a stealth ram ) ......... 13.9 .....and that was with prom tuneing .
good luck man

13.9 w/ a LTR setup and "prom" tuning is kinda pathetic ......
I ran a 13.7 w/ serious tirespin and one of my cats blown out and rattling ..................... My car can go sideways at 40-45 mph as many memebers of my board can attest and run with LS1's.. I do almost all of my own work and this is my first major prom tuning endeavor....
Im not a *** by any means but it is getting faster as i learn more and more and optimize one thing at a time whether prom tuning or suspension....
ZZ4 cam is good if u dont want the hassles of tuning things or are happy with run of the mill performance.. If u want more and get every l;ast bit u have to dig in and do things yourelf and keep going until u get it right....
My car idles at 700 rpm and is fairly smooth for a daily driver and i have over 20k on the current combo in my Formula...

i agree with 3.8 fully, out of many z28s from 90-92 i had one car that would only 14.60s what a pig!all the other cars that were slightly modded were running 13.90s we found later that something was wrong with the cam at 13,000mi.swapped the cam and the pig was running with the rest of the crew(stock L98 cam was installed)slp runners, ported plenum,58mm,24lb injectors, crane fpr,slp2400 stall, slp 1-3/4s,slp full ex.,3.23s pulleys cut air boxes, performance resources chip,on bfg comp t/as at HRP sea level this z ran 1.73 60' 13.37 @103
back in 93.
back in 93. Wow thanks guys for the help! Just two questions..
1. how much difference between a ZZ4 and the hot cam do you think I'd see at the track? Both cams with 1.6 RR's by the way. Maybe just a couple tenths or more like half a second?
2.Is the Hot cam even driveable on a stock SD Prom? I don't think I could get the tune correct right away, having just started burning.
