305 build up
I'm in the process of building up my 86 Z28 and i cant find much performance parts for the TPI 305. I want new heads with performance rods and pistons. I was wondering if Corvette heads with 58cc combustion camber would be good. Any help on what heads to use would help
thanks
thanks

Corvette heads will work well with a 305 but you will need a aftermarket intake or a Corvette intake if you want to keep the EGR fuctional. Other heads that will work are SR305 heads, Vortec heads, and AFR sells a 180CC heads with 1.94/1.6 valves that will work on a 305. I am using the vortec heads and SDPC intake on my 305 and they work very well.

You're not going to find a lot of good parts for the 305. A lot of people ignore them as perormance motors. The reason is pretty simple. If you're going to spend the money to rebuild the bottom end you could just buy a 350. The 350 has a ton more potential than a 305.
The 305 has a small bore, which means that most small block heads won't fit on it, particularlyy those with the 2.02/1.60 valve combination. The valves will actually hit the block. Not good! There are a few heads that will fit it, like the World Products torquers.
In my opinion if you're looking to upgrade the rotating assembly you should just go with a 350, because you're looking to make power that is beyond the ability of a 305. Heck a 383 isn't even that much more expensive than a 350, so maybe...

there's alot of information on the boards about building up the 305. there's a handfull of 305s in the 12's and a few in the 11's.
one thing i've learned is to not ask alot of questions, but to do alot of searching and reading. everyone is going to tell you to buy a 350.

bjankuski mentioned the corvette heads. you can get pretty much the same exact heads (zz4) from gmpartsdepot.com for $570 (the #12556463 aluminum corvette assembly heads), and the casting on those heads doesn't have the intake manifold riser or EGR passages that the production vette heads do, so you they should work perfectly fine with the stock intake manifold. i wouldn't really worry about performance pistons or rods as much as getting a better cam.
