tpi swap
tpi swap
ok this is a mess from the get go, i have an 87 iroc with an 87 305 with an 85 tpi, intake and dist. it took off a quadrajet and installed the tpi by modding the intake. no big deal but when the quadrajet was on there they being the people who owned the car before me wired the fuel pump constant to the fuse box. now when i try to start the car with tpi installed its fires for about one round on the dist and then dies, i dont know what the deal is but it is in time, but wont stay running i climbed under the dash and checked the fuse box the fuel inj fuse is good and i only found 1 fuse for the fuel injs. i read on here somewhere there are supposed to be 2 but i only have 1 and its good, i also have an orange and 2 white wire plun under there that is not plugged in, should it be? sorry for the long post but i am frustrated! thanks

As for the orange, and two white wires, you'll have to trace them out to find out if they're need, or not.
Please check your fuel pressure at the fuel rail, it should be between 40.5 - 47 psi, or around 44 psi with the key on/engine off.
Don't take this as criticism, the parts I colored in your post are contradicting, which statement is correct the red, or blue? They both can't be correct. Running is at least 450 rpm for a few seconds which, one round of the distribution is not.
Need more info:
- Why did they have to modify the wiring? Wasn't the Q-jet original equipment? Was this an 87 TPI swapped to carb by prevoius owner then back to TPI by you?
- Was the car running when you got it?
- Did you swap the engine harness, or repin it?
- Is your 8th VIN digit "F, G, M, Y, or 9?
- are you using and 87 TPI engine harness and ECM, or an 85 setup?
you are correct in saying that it is not running i was useing the term loosely.

as for the answers to these it was a tpi car to start with they for some odd reason put on a qjet. and yes i went back to a tpi out of an 85.yes it ran with the qjet and no computer. i took the wiring harness and comp out of the 85 it plugged into the existing computer plugs i had in the 87 as far as the vin i dont know right off hand but when i did run the vin it came up 5.0 tpi so i called the previous owner and asked and they said they swapped it. thanks for the help!
