Easy cam questions, 88 IROC 350 TPI
I would just like to state that I have scrolled through the archives and articles and didn't find exactly what I was looking for. Maybe I missed something but, I just want you to know, that if I am littering your board with a repeat thread, I tried not to.
Anyway let's get down to the nitty gritty.
I have been out of the third gen game for well over a year and I have forgotten just about everything (I'm a Mopar guy) so this is all I know, or what I think I know--
I have a 1988 Camaro IROC Z28
It has a 350 and Tuned Port Injection
The option code is L98??
It has rollerised valve train
My MAIN question is would I be better off switching to a flat tappet cam set up OR keeping a rollerised valve train?
Money isn't really an issue as far as cam price so give me your most outrageous scenarios if you'd like. I plan on getting the plenum ported and some other not so expensive mods just to make it perform like a weekend warrior. No drag race stuff I plan on driving this car everyday.
I'm looking at a ZZ4 cam and I'm worried that it has too much duration and lift, maybe the computer will be boggled by the different situation under the hood? What's the best I can get with a fairly Mild TPI set up?
I know the cam selection part has got to be a repeat but, I swear I didn't find it in the archives.
Any help is appreciated.

you wont have any problems with the zz4 cam,474/510 lift is fine i would suggest a 2500 or bigger stall to optimize the power of this cam,an aftermarket chip is always a good idea as well as an adj.fuel reg, porting the plenum, adding a 58mm tb,24lb injectors, underdrive pulleys, cut air boxes add k&NS,most of all a set of heddman or hooker shorties and a flomaster after-cat system.....88s suffered from a crappy factory cam as well as the 86s what was the general thinkin then?these mods as well as 3.23s or 3.42s you should run mid 13s,you are about sea level.good luck.

Actually the 88 L98's had decent cams stock. The zz4 would be a good upgrade, but you could easily step up the hotcam on a stock engine with no problems. Because your car is an 88, it is a MAF car and will not require a custom chip as badly. A hotcam would lope but a zz4 would not have noticeable lope. It just depends on what you want.
I ran a comp cams xe268hr 218/224 on112 LSA 495/503 (very similar to the hotcam) on a stock chip for 6 monthes with no problems. When I got a scanner and started burning chips, there was almost no tuning to do to my fuel curves.

I would definately stay with the roller set-up.
The roller will last forever. Its perf will not degrade.
The flat tappet will wear out. Its perf will slowly degrade over its lifetime.
The roller will open the valves quicker and close them quicker.
The valves are in the "full open" position longer, thus considerably more flow compared to a flat tappet for the same lift/dur.
I'm using a LPE 74211 cam and I'm very happy with it.
211/219 .530/.560 w/1.6
It makes great torque from idle to abt 5500 RPM.
It has a very slight lope at 700 RPM.
It does require some head mods (spring seat enlargement, screw-in studs, beefy springs, etc.).
Don't forget to pick-up some Comp Pro Mag full roller rockers too!!:lala:
