Do TPIs NEED the TPI charcoal cannister?

I'm still running my 1971 cannister. The car runs good, but I still have an fuel/exhaust odor while idling. There's also the smell of fuel around the car when it's off. I'm wondering if I need to put in the late model cannister.

I know I have no fuel leaks anywhere and my BLMs are perfect. The injectors are not leaking either.

Does the ECM programming require the TPI cannister?

Is it computer controlled? Mine is from my old carb setup. The ECM has absolutely no control over it.

If your gas cap is broken, your going to smell fumes outside of the car, same problem with my 89 formula 350, when the o ring that seals the cap when tightened was trashed, buy a new one! Also the charcoal canister just absorbs fuel vapors from the tank when the car is sitting, instead of venting off into the atmosphere, and when the car is running, it injects it back into the throttle body, thereby recycling the fumes, this is also an emissions thing, and is a requirement under epa rules and regulations, but **** them, who needs emissions!

Your best bet is that your gas cap is leaking the fumes, not the canister.

Could a non sealing gas cap and a bad charcoal cannister filter make my car use more gas than usual? I know the cap doesnt seal cause i smell gas and the charcoal filter is original.

I had the gas smell sometimes after I installed a TPI motor in my S-10. The correct charcoal canister solved the problem. They are cheap and easy to install, so why not use it.

yeah, those damn gas caps, when faulty can be the cause for losing up to 35 gallons per year when they leak. This is because gasoline can evaporate, I know that the 35 g per year is true, because the epa posts it on the emissions notice, and thats why they test your gas caps now too, its so gay, I hate the epa and all the **** they make us go through. we'll all be dead before any emissions from our vehicles makes a difference in the air quality.

I removed mine to make room for a CAI and notice no gas smells. Let me know if you want mine, I'll let it go for cheap.

The 165 & 730 ecm do control the tpi canister. They purge it at some set interval so I do suggest you either delete it as some have done using a gas filter or get the correct one.

Check the DIY Prom board for more details on the emissions controls in the TPI ecms.

Yeah, I've been doing a tremendous amount of research on that board regarding the CCP. I'm intending to turn it off completely in the ECM, but without distrurbing the highway mode. Apparently the CCP duty cycle is tied into the BLM cell number, which affects whether or not you can get into highway mode fuel. But first, I want to verify that my 1971 cannister is satisfactory for a TPI application. Otherwise, I'm going to have to get the Painless TPI emissions harness and route it in so as to run a TPI cannister. PITA if I can avoid it.

if you want to mess with one of your friends with a 4thgen, partway unscrew a gas cap

after a couple mins of running with it loose, it sets the SES light.
