Header wrap around TPI runners?

To keep them cooler, therefore keeping the air flowing thru them cooler. Anyone ever try this?

I know it gets done a lot to cold air intake tubes - so why not intake runners? Seems like it would work to me.

the biggest problem with the runners, is that when the car sits, the intake heat soaks, this happens alot at the track unless you open your hood, a bag of ice is the best way to keep it cool.

I'm sure wrapping them would help somewhat, but alot of the heat is transferred through the material, hot to cold(thermodynamics).

You'd have to try it out and see how it would work, results would probably be marginal.

I'd imagine it would keep more heat in, than out. there is NO way to avoid the heat, no matter well you insulate. Therefore, you might as well allow them to cool as much as possible. For early runs, before the manifold heats up, I can see it helping, but if the engine is just getting warm, then the engine bay isn't that warm either.

I could be wrong, ....JM2 cents

No no - I think you guys make some good points. It is probably not worth it because the runners are so very close to the engines radiated heat, and surrounded by other hot parts. Just an idea I had, and wanted to see what my fellow TGOers thought.

It would only trap more heat in. You best bet is to have a fresh air opening at the rear of the hood to allow heat to escape.

Good point on the rear opening in the hood for fresh air.

It's an old trick. Make some metal plates ( THIN ) and mount them between your hood mounts and your hood. This will elevate the rear of the hood slightly...letting air in...this is an OLD trick.

As far as the wrap, it's not gonna be worth it, in my opinion.

What most people with TPI don't realize, is that cooling the intake / runners / fuel rail and getting COOL, fresh air into the intake tract is worth a GOOD bit of power on even stockish TPI cars.

Back when these cars were still pretty new, I owned a 5 speed IROC that gained 4 tenths CONSISTENTLY from a cold air intake ( used the factory lid, gutted it and ran tubing to the grill, NOT a new idea, and from leaving ice on soaking on the runners / intake between runs.

Another idea is dry ice, or what I used to do..Those blue bags that you freeze...I'd lay a few of those on the car between rounds.

The purpose for header wrap was before there were ceramic coatings, the wrap reduced underhood temps. Keeping heat in the headers also helped velocity and the exhaust moved faster, drawing spent air out of the cylinders. The downside wasthe wrap reduced the life of the headers.

You want the intake side as cool as possible. Stone cold after icing with the bottom end still slightly warm results in almost 2-3 tenths!!

cgb, you could also jack up your hood brackets to get the back of the hood up, and move the hood latch up on the bolts to get the front of the hood up some more, to help bring in some more airflow.

When I removed the plastic piece that covered up the bulge on my 89 formula 350's hood, the car would cool off considerably faster when the car sat with the hood closed.

I am aware of those tricks - but thank you. The car is getting treated to a hardwood or asc cowl hood in the near future - that should take of that.

For now, the hood insulation has been removed along with the weather seal in the back and that showed me me some quicker cooling off both at the track and on the street.

It was an idea - bad ideas get squashed quick around these boards and I am very thankful for that.
